Highlights
  • Apple’s 90Hz display could replace the standard 60Hz screens on some devices.
  • Reports suggest that the new display technology may debut in early 2025.

Apple is said to be working on a new 90Hz display technology. The news was tipped to the Upgrade Podcast hosted by Apple enthusiast Jason Snell and Myke Hurley. Apple’s latest display could be featured on the iPad Air, iMac, and the Studio Display. Here are the details.

Apple’s 90Hz Display is in the Works

According to the tipster, Apple is working on a new liquid motion panel, fixed at around 90Hz. The upcoming M3 iPad Air is said to feature the display. It may also reach the 24-inch iMac and the Studio Display.

Currently, Apple does not have a 90Hz display. The company only offers 60Hz and 120Hz (ProMotion) displays. The rumoured display could replace the 60Hz panels, offering an upgrade to 90Hz, without significant price hikes in the products.

Multiple reports have surfaced online that mention that the upcoming iPhone 17 lineup may feature 120Hz ProMotion screens on all models. As of now, the ProMotion screens are limited to the iPhone Pro models. The base and Plus variants still use a 60Hz panel.

It is worth noting that Apple does not produce its own display panels. The company has sourced its screens from Samsung and LG. Apple works in collaboration with both manufacturers to customize and curate display panels specially for its own products. These display panels remain exclusive to Apple and cannot be used or supplied to any other company.

Apple’s new iPad Air is expected to debut in early 2025, as per Bloomberg. It is more likely to feature the M3 chip, which will also make it compatible with Apple Intelligence features. However, there are no rumours available for the upcoming Studio Display.

Since these are rumours, we have to take them with a grain of salt and wait for more information for a conclusive idea. So, stay tuned for more updates.
