Samsung is ending support for its Dex for PC functionality. This functionality allowed users to connect their Samsung phone to any Windows computer and seamlessly share screens, files, and other information. It will be replaced by Microsoft’s Link to Windows. The change will come into effect with the upcoming One UI 7 update. Here are the details.
Samsung Dex for Windows to Stop Working After One UI 7
The official website of Samsung UK has confirmed that the company is pulling the plug on its Dex for PC feature on Windows. The Dex app will no longer receive updates, and may not remain compatible with upcoming Samsung phones. Users will soon be migrated to the Link to Windows feature.
To recall, the Samsung Dex concept was launched in 2017. It originally came with a proprietary docking station, allowing users to connect their Samsung phone to a monitor and use it as a desktop. The company soon expanded support for a Windows app, which allowed people to share their phone’s screen directly on their computer, transfer files, and use other key functions of their device.
This feature was exclusive to high-end Samsung smartphones. However, the Dex for Windows app will now be shut down with One UI 7, which is expected to be released in early 2025 with the Galaxy S25 Series. Users will have the option to retain almost all features using Link to Windows, with some minor UI changes.
Samsung is not entirely ending the Dex concept. Only the Windows app will be discontinued. Compatible devices will continue to have the option to use their phone as a PC using suitable accessories.
It is important to note that Samsung is only discontinuing support for the Dex app. It is possible that users may still be able to use the feature even in One UI 7. However, Samsung may also block its ability to work with the update and force users to shift to Link to Windows. The company has not clarified anything on this yet.
