Motorola has just unveiled its flagship series called the Moto Edge in global markets. There are two devices in the lineup, the Moto Edge and the Edge Plus, the latter of which is the company’s first flagship device in years while the former is a powerful mid-range offering. The Moto Edge has been launched at a starting price of EUR 599 (about Rs 50,000) although it is currently not available in India. At its price point, the phone is certainly a competitor to the iPhone SE 2020 and the OnePlus 8. Let’s compare this new Moto Edge with both these phones in several categories and see which one comes out on top.
Moto Edge vs iPhone SE 2020 vs OnePlus 8: Price
As mentioned earlier, the Moto Edge has been priced at EUR 599 which is about Rs 50,000. And we expect it to launch at around the same price in the Indian market. The Apple iPhone SE 2020 and the OnePlus 8, on the other hand, are priced much cheaper, starting at Rs 42,500 and Rs 41,999 respectively. It would appear that the OnePlus 8 is the least expensive smartphone of the lot, provided the Moto Edge launches at Rs 50,000 pricepoint or near about. Of course, there are also other things to consider along with the pricing of a phone, so let’s get into that.
Moto Edge vs iPhone SE 2020 vs OnePlus 8: Display Features
The Moto Edge has what the company calls an ‘Endless Edge’ design which basically means that the display spills to an almost 90-degree angle on both sides. The screen size is 6.7-inches OLED panel with Full HD+ resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. There is a single punch-hole camera on the top-left of the screen and extremely small top and bottom bezels which gives the Moto Edge an above 90 percent screen-to-body ratio. The iPhone SE 2020, on the other hand, has an extremely dated design with a small 4.7-inch IPS LCD, 60Hz refresh rate, and giant bezels flanking it. The OnePlus 8, on the other hand, has a 6.5-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. There is a single punch-hole display on the top-left of the phone’s display.
While the iPhone SE 2020 has been left far behind in the display department, the competition is tough between the OnePlus 8 and Moto Edge as all parameters such as refresh rate, resolution, and aspect ratio are the same. The latter might just ‘edge out’ (pun intended) the former thanks to an extremely curved display which should give a more immersive viewing experience.
Moto Edge vs iPhone SE 2020 vs OnePlus 8: Camera
A triple-camera setup is present on the Moto Edge with a 64MP primary sensor along with 16MP wide-angle camera and an 8MP telephoto camera. The front of the phone has a 20MP selfie shooter. The iPhone SE 2020 has a paltry 12MP single camera layout on the back and a 7MP selfie camera on the front. The OnePlus 8 has a 48MP primary sensor along with a 16MP ultra-wide sensor and a 2MP macro sensor. There is a 16MP front camera as well.
Judging by the higher number of pixel count on all the sensors combined, it would be a safe bet to say that the Moto Edge has the best camera as compared to all these phones.
Moto Edge vs iPhone SE 2020 vs OnePlus 8: Processing and software
Since the Moto Edge is one of the latest phones, it does pack in the recently announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset which also gives the device 5G capabilities. Apart from that, the device will run a stock skin of Android 10.0, which has been standard on Moto phones for quite some time. On the other hand the iPhone SE 2020 packs in flagship specs with the powerful A13 Bionic chipset which puts it on power with the $999 iPhone 11 Pro. Add to that is iOS 13 and the security of regular updates for the foreseeable future. The OnePlus 8 also is a flagship-grade device with the Snapdragon 865 SoC and nearly 12GB of RAM options. Also, OnePlus’ OxygenOS skin on Android 10 has been widely appreciated for its simplicity and ease of use.
Even so, the iPhone SE 2020 might be considered the most powerful amongst all the three phones and the close integration of Apple’s software and hardware is an added bonus.
Moto Edge vs iPhone SE 2020 vs OnePlus 8: Battery and charging
The Moto Edge comes with a 4,500mAh battery with support for 18W TurboPower charging. Apple has not revealed the battery specs of the iPhone SE 2020, but considering its small size, one can say that the capacity is below 2,000mAh. There is, however, 18W fast charging support although the box of the device will ship with a 5W charger. The phone also supports wireless charging as well. The OnePlus 8 has a 4,300mAh battery with Warp Charge 30T support which will charge half your battery in 22 minutes.
Overall, it would seem that the OnePlus 8 which has a comparable battery to the Moto Edge but nearly double the charging speed, is a worthy option.
Moto Edge vs iPhone SE 2020 vs OnePlus 8: Final verdict
All the phones are good in some areas but no phone is the best in all the areas. However, if an all-rounder has to be decided based on the above comparisons, then it would have to be the OnePlus 8 thanks to its affordable price tag which is complimented by flagship specs.
