In today’s smartphone software update news, three handsets have received important improvements through updates. The Motorola One Power got a small but important software update that improves its network stability and call quality, while two Xiaomi phones in the Mi 8 series started receiving Android 9 Pie operating system version update.
The Mi 8 series has not been launched in India, but there are quite a few fans waiting for those phones here. The phones were launched in China in early 2018, and came with Android 8.0 Oreo-based MIUI 9 software. Later, the phones received MIUI 10 updates, but the firmware was still based on Android 8.1 Oreo.
Motorola One Power Gets December 2018 Android Security Patch
In a Reddit discussion, it was noted that Motorola One Power devices in India have started receiving a new software update, carrying Android’s December 2018 security patch. The update also improves network stability and improves call quality for the devices, and provides better system stability. The Motorola One Power is an Android One smartphone, which means that it runs stock Android UI and gets timely updates. This mid-range best-selling device was upgraded from Android 8.0 Oreo to Android 9 Pie in November 2018.
Android 9 Pie for Mi 8
Xiaomi’s Mi 8 and Mi 8 Explorer Edition smartphones never saw the light of day in India, because the company is focused on capturing the budget and mid-range smartphone market in the country instead of fighting it out in the premium smartphone segment. The phones, however, do great in China and gave stirred up interest among fans across the globe. While beta testing was going on for a while, Xiaomi is now rolling out the official stable version of MIUI 10 based on Android 9 Pie for these two phones. Other handsets in the lineup, such as Mi 8 Lite and Mi 8 Pro, have not yet received the upgrade, but it is likely that they won’t have to wait much longer.
The MIUI 10 Android 9 Pie update also adds two excellent features to the Mi 8 and Mi Explorer Edition’s camera app. The devices will now get a Night Mode, where AI Smart Metering will identify points in the image that need fixing, and the camera will fix the color to make the image more free of noise. The other feature is Super Slow Motion video recording at 960fps, with WeChat integration for quick sharing.
As we have seen on some Xiaomi devices, the MIUI 10 based on Android 9 Pie introduces a completely revised user interface that makes multitasking easier and adds several new features, including gesture navigation, hands-free voice commands in driving mode and better AI integration.
