After announcing the all new Nokia 8.1 in Dubai last week, HMD Global held an event in India today. During the event, which was held in New Delhi, the company spoke about its design process and went on to launch the Nokia 8.1. We were already expecting this announcement and knew all the details, so this wasn’t much of a surprise. However, we did not know the pricing and availability details for the phone. HMD Global did announce both these details at the event, thankfully.
The Nokia 8.1 is the global variant of the Nokia X7, which was launched in China last month. It is now available for purchase in India as well.
Nokia 8.1 Price and Availability
The Nokia 8.1 is a mid-range smartphone and comes equipped with the new Snapdragon 710 chipset from Qualcomm. This is a very powerful and efficient mid-range SoC that bridges the gap between the flagship 800 series and the mid-range 600 series. Oppo R17 Pro is the only other smartphone in India that ships with the Snapdragon 710 chipset. If you were looking for a smartphone with this processor, then you have only two choices at the moment.
HMD Global has priced the Nokia 8.1 very competitively in the country. The phone is sold in just one variant, which features 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. It is priced at INR 26,999 and is definitely much cheaper than the Oppo R17 Pro. The Nokia 8.1 will be available for purchase starting December 21 from Amazon India, Nokia India, and several offline retailers. Pre-orders for the phone will begin shortly via Amazon and Nokia India online stores. You can choose between two color options – Blue/Silver and Iron/Steel.
As for launch offers, HMD Global is providing 10 percent cashback for HDFC Credit and Debit Card users. Also, Airtel prepaid customers will get up to 1TB of free data and postpaid users will get 120GB of extra data. The company has also tied up with Servify to provide free 6-month screen replacements. You can learn more about these offers by heading over the Nokia Online store.
Nokia 8.1 Features and Specs
Alright, let’s talk about the specifications and the features of the Nokia 8.1 smartphone. The phone comes with a 6.18-inch FHD+ display that supports HDR10 and has an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. The screen can get quite bright, up to 500nits, and also has a notch at the top and a chin at the bottom. HMD Global has used a mixture of 6000 series aluminium and glass for the construction of the Nokia 8.1, which gives it a very premium look.
Internally, the Snapdragon 710 processor powers the phone. The chipset is paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage with support for a microSD card. The phone supports dual-SIM as well and has a fingerprint scanner at the back. You will also find a dual-camera setup at the back, which includes a primary 12MP sensor with OIS and EIS. The secondary camera has a resolution of 13MP and is used for depth sensing. A 20MP sensor is available at the front to take selfies. Nokia does use AI to provide extra camera features such as improved low-light, and Face unlock. A 3500mAh battery is available with support for 18W fast charging. On the software side, this is another Android One phone from HMD Global. This means that the phone runs Android 9.0 Pie out of the box, in its stock form. The Nokia 8.1 also features a 3.5mm headphone jack.
