The Nokia 8.1, which is the Chines Nokia X7 in disguise, was just announced at a global event in Dubai on December 6 by HMD Global. The company behind Nokia had sent invites to the Indian media for the launch of the handset on December 10 in the country. Earlier, the handset was believed to be coming as a Nokia 7.1 Plus but Nokia has branded it as a Nokia 8 series phone now. The main features of the handset include a Snapdragon 710 chipset, a PureView display, stock Android, and Zeiss-branded dual rear cameras.
Nokia 8.1 Launch Time & Live Streaming
The Nokia 8.1 Android One smartphone is slated to launch today in India. The launch event starts at 5:30 PM IST and will live stream on official Nokia Youtube, Facebook and Twitter pages. We will update the live stream links here once we know the details officially.
Nokia 8.1 Specifications, Features
Nokia has dished out some pretty well-built glass-metal finish phones this year and even entry-level handsets from the OEM look and feel premium. Same goes for the Nokia 8.1. It has a steel frame with a chrome finish and there’s glass at the back. It is a solidly well-built device too as the body is made out of 6000 series aluminium. On the front, the Nokia 8.1 comes with a notched display and that’s where it differs from the Nokia 7 Plus besides the glass-plated back.
The Nokia 8.1 Plus uses the company’s own HDR10 certified PureView display technology. The display measures 6.18-inches has an aspect ratio of 18.7:9, and a resolution of 1080×2244 pixels. While many do not like the notch design, it does help in achieving a better 81.5 percent screen-to-body ratio here. Under the hood, an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 SoC takes its place alongside 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Of course, there’s memory expandability on it as well up to 400GB via MicroSD. The Nokia 8.1 will run Android Pie out-of-the-box powered by a 3500mAh battery that is capable of 18W fast charge.
Coming to the camera specifications, the Nokia 8.1 has a 20 MP selfie shooter and it comes with pixel binning. The rear combo is comprised of a primary 12MP sensor that boasts OIS and EIS as well. The secondary depth sensor is 13MP. Beneath it lies a fingerprint reader and a Nokia branding. The camera also comes with Nokia’s trademark Boathie feature that uses both front and rear cameras to capture two selfies at the same time. In terms of connectivity, the Nokia 8.1 houses USB Type-C, dual-SIM, 4G VoLTE, Bluetooth v5.0, and a 3.5mm headphone jack option.
Nokia 8.1 Expected Price in India, Availability
If the European pricing is any indication, the Nokia 8.1 could cost anywhere in the region of EUR 399 (roughly Rs. 31,900). If that also ends up being the Indian price, that’s costlier than last year’s Nokia 7 Plus model. However, there aren’t many smartphones with the said processor in India apart from the OPPO R17 Pro, so it would be interesting to see how well it sells at this price point. The Nokia 8.1 comes in just one storage variant – 4GB + 64GB as of now. Colour options include Blue/ Silver, Steel/ Copper, and Iron/ Steel.
While Nokia could price the handset more aggressively in India, it could be a hard sell considering the super competitive nature of the market. For example, the Asus ZenFone 5Z which is a flagship-grade device, that has a Snapdragon 845, costs under INR 30,000 while the POCO F1, which is receiving Android Pie, retails for around INR 20,000.
