HMD Global launched the Nokia X7, its latest X-series smartphone in China last month. The smartphone is currently on sale only in China but is soon expected to be launched in global markets as the Nokia 8.1. A new leak has now surfaced online, which claims the Nokia 8.1 will be the last smartphone to feature a notched display. This means future Nokia-branded smartphones from HMD Global will not feature a notch. Instead, the company will reportedly use “another interesting solution” to enhance the screen-to-body ratio.
Nokia 8.1 (X7) Last Nokia Smartphone to Feature a Notched Display?
According to a tweet @nokiamobileru, the Nokia 6.2 will not feature a notched display. HMD Global has apparently decided it is time to move away from notches and is looking at another solution to help maximize the screen real estate. If the information is indeed accurate, this means the Nokia 8.1 is going to be the last Nokia-branded smartphone to have a notch at the top. The tweet also suggests the Nokia 9 is not the only upcoming smartphone from HMD Global. Apart from the flagship Nokia 9, the company could soon launch the Nokia 6.2 as well. As you may have guessed by its name, the Nokia 6.2 is expected to be a successor to the current Nokia 6.1 and not the Nokia 6.1 Plus (review). HMD Global had announced the Nokia 6.1 in January this year, so there is a good chance that its successor may be announced in January 2019. As of now, however, there is absolutely no information available regarding the possible hardware specifications or key features of the Nokia 6.2.
Why are we talking only about Nokia 9? It's time to think about other models. Someone here was asking…
There will be #NoNotch in Nokia 6.2. Another interesting solution will be used. Thus, Nokia 8.1 can complete the "Notch parade" in the #Nokia line-up.#exclusive #nokia6— Nokia anew (@nokiamobileru) November 21, 2018
Nokia 8.1 Expected to Launch in India Next Week
If a recent report is to be believed, HMD Global may launch the Nokia 8.1 in India at an event on November 28. However, the company is yet to send out media invites for the event. The same report had also claimed that the smartphone may be priced at INR 23,999 in India. In China, the Nokia X7 starts at CNY 1,699 (INR 18,000 approx.) for the base memory configuration with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The top-end 6GB RAM + 128GB storage variant of the Nokia X7 is priced at CNY 2,499 (INR 26,500 approx.). It remains to be seen if the Nokia 8.1 will be offered in multiple memory configurations in the Indian market.
The Nokia 8.1 is expected to be identical to the Nokia X7 in terms of specifications. It will feature a 6.18-inch IPS LCD display with 1080 x 2280 pixels Full HD+ resolution and a 19:9 aspect ratio. Powering the mid-range smartphone will be a 10nm octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor clocked at up to 2.2 GHz with an Adreno 616 GPU. In the memory department, we expect the Nokia 8.1 to be available with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.
As for optics, the Nokia 8.1 will feature a 12MP + 13MP dual-camera setup with the primary sensor boasting large 1.4um pixel size as well as optical image stabilization. For selfies, you will find a 20MP snapper at the front with an f/2.0 aperture. Keeping the lights on will be a 3500mAh capacity non-removable battery with 18W fast charging support. Like other Nokia-branded smartphones released this year, the Nokia 8.1 will be part of the Android One program and is likely to run on the Android 9.0 Pie operating system out of the box.
