Reliance’s JioPhone and JioPhone 2 received support for WhatsApp in October of last year. That was around the same time the Nokia 8110 4G, aka the Banana Phone went on sale in India. As such, Nokia found itself in a tough spot as its latest feature phone could not perform the same functionality the JioPhones could despite both of them running on KaiOS. Luckily, this changes today. HMD Global has now announced that its Nokia 8110 4G can run WhatsApp. Simply head on over to the Nokia Store which comes bundled on the handset, and download the messaging app.

Ajey Mehta, VP and Country Head – India for HMD Global expressed joy and excitement as India will be among the first to get WhatsApp support on the Nokia 8110 4G. He said, “The Nokia 8110 is a phone for ‘the originals’ and I hope along with adding to the style quotient, this new addition of WhatsApp to the already existing bouquet of apps on Nokia 8110 will make it the ideal choice for our fans.”

Nokia 8110 4G Price Down to INR 4,999

Nokia’s Banana Phone went on sale in India last year at an introductory price of INR 5,999. HMD Global seems to have brought the phone’s price down indefinitely. Both offline and online retail partners will now sell the phone at just INR 4,999. This is still not as affordable as the Jio Phone 2 which retails for INR 2,999, but the latter doesn’t have the same sex appeal the Banana Phone possesses.

To recall, Nokia’s 8110 4G comes with a 2.45-inch QVGA screen that bears a resolution of 240×320 pixels. This 4G-capable feature phone is powered by a 1.1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 205 processor, which has been paired with 512MB of LPDDR3 RAM and 4GB of storage. Up to 32GB of additional storage can be added with the use of a microSD card. While the Banana Yellow color model is likely to garner more attention, one can opt for a more subtle look by going with the Traditional Black model.

As mentioned above, the phone runs KaiOS and comes with its own Store for applications including Facebook. HMD Global also collaborated with Google to offer applications such as the Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Search on the Nokia 8110 4G. Keeping the lights on is a 1500mAh capacity battery.
