OnePlus has kept its promise of upgrading the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T to Android 9 Pie, and how! With only a few days left for 2019 to begin, the brand has released OTA updates for both the devices, announcing the arrival of official stable updates on its forum.
The Android 9 Pie stable operating system update adds Gaming Mode 3.0 with a new text notification mode to these two smartphones, and the OnePlus 5T gets to ditch the navigation buttons for gesture navigation.
No Gesture Navigation For OnePlus 5
Sadly, the OnePlus 5 lacks an 18:9 screen and is now a bit too old for this new approach to navigating apps and pages, so it does not get gesture navigation. Gesture navigation is Android’s answer to fullscreen and bezel-free smartphones, which is a new trend and only gained traction in 2018. Gesture navigation removes on-screen navigation buttons to replace them with a single button, the rest of the job is covered by gestures, such as swiping up till midway once to see recent apps, and once more to see the full app drawer.
As you can guess, this approach does not work for devices with physical or capacitive navigation buttons, which the OnePlus 5 has. Even with Android 9 Pie beta builds, which were released for testing earlier, gesture navigation was available only for the OnePlus 5T and nothing has changed with the stable update rollout. Apart from this one bit, all other changes to the software are the same for OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T.
Pie For OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T Too
Both the OnePlus 5 and the OnePlus 5T, as you may be aware, were released in 2017, with both of them were brought to the world keeping up the OnePlus brand name. This year’s OnePlus 6T came with Android 9 Pie out of the box, and soon the OnePlus 6 (review) received the Pie upgrade. In 2016, OnePlus released its first smartphone to be sold without the invite system, making the OnePlus 3 instantly popular. Soon the OnePlus 3T was released, and both phones received excellent reviews from experts and users alike.
The brand, in July this year, promised Android 9 Pie updates for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T as well. This was a surprising break from convention since Google officially provides only two years of software updates for its supported devices, and it has been more than two years since the launch of the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. Now that these two phones are next in line, let’s see when and how OnePlus manages to give them the Android 9 Pie upgrade.
Full Changelog For Android 9 Pie In OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T
The Android 9 Pie official stable update brings December 2018 Android security patch to the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T, and gives them a completely new user interface. The firmware is called OxygenOS 9.0.0 and will take up about 1.7GB, so it is recommended to connect to Wi-Fi and leave your device on charging for the update. As mentioned above, there will be gesture navigation for the OnePlus 5T but not the OnePlus 5.
The camera on both phones will now get Google Lens integration, and a new ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode will be added where you can change settings, such as which apps or contacts are to be allowed to send notifications. Both phones will also get a new Gaming Mode 3.0, which gets notifications for third party calls and also a text notification mode.
