The upcoming OnePlus Smartwatch might run Google's WearOS platform.

OnePlus started working on its first-ever Smartwatch back in 2015, but it decided to scrap the plan a year later. Though the company had completed the design, the company chose to scrap it in favor of the company’s focus on smartphones. A few months back, we started hearing about the OnePlus Smartwatch again. In fact, the company teased the upcoming OnePlus Smartwatch on social media handles. Back in November, a popular tipster Max Jambor, claimed that the upcoming OnePlus smartwatch will not run Google’s WearOS. Now, OnePlus CEO, Pete, in an interview, has confirmed that OnePlus is indeed working on a smartwatch, but contrary to Max’s claim, it might run Google’s WearOS platform.

In a recent interview with Input Mag, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau said,

“Wear OS definitely has room to improve. What we’re trying to do is work with Google to try to improve the connectivity between the Wear OS ecosystem, Android TV, and Android smartphones to create this ability for better device interoperability across the ecosystems. This has been something looked at very positively from Google’s side as well, so this is the direction that we’re trying to develop, but we don’t have more than we can share on that right now.”

OnePlus is working directly with Google’s Wear OS team. These companies are working together to improve how a WearOS smartwatch interacts with Android smartphones and Android TV. The company is yet to reveal the exact launch timeline or model name of the upcoming smartwatch. Previous leaks suggested that the company will call it the OnePlus Watch and it was also expected to sport a circular dial design.

The alleged OnePlus Watch was listed on IMDA and received BIS certification sites a couple of months back. The company has been broadening its portfolio lately and entered into the smart TV and TWS segment quite recently. With the upcoming Smartwatch, it is going to debut in yet another category.
