OnePlus to Launch Its First 5G Smartphone Powered by Snapdragon 855 SoC in Partnership with EE in Europe

The OnePlus 7 will come equipped with the Snapdragon 855 chipset. OnePlus will also launch the very first 5G smartphone in the UK.

During day two of the Qualcomm Summit 2018 being held in Maui, Hawaii, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau took to the stage for making some important announcements. He stated that the 2019 OnePlus flagship will be the first smartphone in Europe to feature the latest Snapdragon 855 chipset.

Qualcomm announced the all new 7nm chipset at the summit, which is a lot more powerful and efficient than the current SD 845. It also includes support for a 5G modem and features interesting tech such as 3D Face Detect, Ultra Sonic fingerprint scanners, and more. Overall, the OnePlus 7, will be a really powerful smartphone but will most likely not support 5G connectivity.

OnePlus 7 to Feature Snapdragon 855 Processor

Although the upcoming OnePlus flagship is said to equip the Snapdragon 855 chipset, though it will not be the first in the world. We recently spotted new variants of the Oppo Find X and the Vivo NEX with Snapdragon 855 chipsets on board. These new devices, along with a couple others, are said to release early next year. Samsung is also readying the Galaxy S10 smartphone which will also use the same chipset. Even the Xiaomi Mi 9 will come equipped with the SD 855. So yes, we are going to see plenty of new smartphones with the SD 855 chipset in the first half of 2019. Qualcomm announced the chipset is already in mass production.

However, OnePlus will be one of the first Snapdragon 855 equipped flagships to be available in the European Union. It was the only company that was part of the Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit. The Chinese smartphone and accessory manufacturer, owned by BBK, has always used a Snapdragon 8 series chipset on its smartphone. OnePlus will only make flagship smartphones and is thrilled to use the new SD 855 on the upcoming flagship.

OnePlus 5G Smartphone

When on stage, CEO Pete Lau, also announced that OnePlus would be the first to release a 5G smartphone in the UK. This 5G phone will be released in partnership with the EE network in UK. According to RootMetrics, EE is the number one mobile carrier in the UK, five years in a row.

This 5G OnePlus device will be an all new smartphone from the company and will also use the Snapdragon 855 chipset. It will be launched alongside the OnePlus 7, but the new 5G device is said to cost around $200 more than the regular variant. It is possible that OnePlus will announce a whole new series of smartphones, similar to the OnePlus X. The new phone could be simply called OnePlus 5G. Alex Katouzian, the SVP and GM, mobile, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc, stated:

“We are proud to work with OnePlus to continue to bring breakthrough mobile experiences to consumers. Snapdragon 855 is designed to deliver multi-gigabit 5G, industry leading AI and immersive extended reality (XR) ushering in a new decade of wireless experiences to come.”

OnePlus has been working with Qualcomm to develop a 5G smartphone since 2017. The companies achieved a new milestone when a 5G capable device sent the world’s first tweet over the network in October 2018. Right now, this new phone is still under development and the CEO isn’t sure what other unique features it would have. The price bump will mean that this phone will not be purchased by a lot of users, but that’s okay, says OnePlus. The phone will use different and expensive materials when compared to the non-5G variant. OnePlus expects the phone to go on sale around May 2019.
