Oppo has made yet another addition to its the A-series of budget smartphones in the form of a new variant for the existing Oppo A83 (2018) phone. The latest variant comes with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. Previously, Oppo launched the Oppo A83 (2018) with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The latest 2GB RAM variant is an entry-level model of the phone.
Oppo A83 (2018) 2GB RAM Variant Lacks Face Unlock, Ultra HD Imaging
The latest 2GB RAM variant of the Oppo A83 (2018) lacks Face Unlock that unlocks the smartphone by mapping the face of the user. It also misses out on supporting the Ultra HD mode for image capture. Other models of the Oppo A83 (2018) have the Ultra HD mode that allows them to click several images from the 13MP rear camera and then merge them to make a 50MP image.
What’s Wrong With Oppo’s Pricing Strategy For Budget Phones
The 4GB RAM variant of the Oppo A83 (2018) is priced at Rs. 15,990. This variant competes with the likes of Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 5 Pro, Realme 2 Pro, and several other phones. Both of these phones offer better specs and value for money than the Oppo A83 (2018). The latest 2GB RAM variant of the phone is priced at Rs. 8,990 that makes it compete with a phone from its own sub-brand, the Realme C1. Interestingly, the Realme C1 is priced lower than the 2GB RAM variant of the Oppo A83 (2018) but has to offer way better specs and features. We wonder what kind of haywire strategy is being followed by Oppo for the budget phone.
On one hand, the company has disrupted the market with its worthy offerings such as the Realme 2, Realme 2 Pro, and the Realme C1. On the other hand, it seems to be taking a high road for its not so worthy offering in the budget segment such as the Oppo A83 (2018). The under-powered 2GB RAM variant of the phone does not stand a chance in front of the competitors such as the Realme C1 and the Xiaomi Redmi 6A. It would be interesting to see how the Oppo A18 (2018) 2GB RAM variant performs in the market.
The Oppo A83 (2018) comes with a 5.7-inch HD+ display with 720×1440 pixels resolution. The phone is powered by a 2.5GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6763T chipset clubbed with 2GB/3GB/4GB of RAM and 16GB/32GB/64GB storage, depending on the variant. The phone runs Android 7.1 Nougat-based ColorOS 3.2 OS out-of-the-box.
Concerning optics, the Oppo A83 (2018) sports a 13MP rear camera with LED flash, f/2.2 aperture, and an 8MP selfie snapper with f/2.2 aperture. Connectivity options on the phone include dual-SIM, 4G VoLTE, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, microUSB, and USB OTG. A 3180mAh battery backs the device.
