OPPO A9 vs Realme 3 Pro vs Redmi Note 7 Pro

The OPPO A9 is the latest mid-range offering from the Chinse phone maker to make its way to the Indian market. At a starting price of INR 15,490, the phone inevitably faces fierce competition from the likes of the Redmi Note 7 Pro (review) and the Realme 3 Pro (review), both of which have dominated the market because of their exceptional value propositions. Does the OPPO A9 have what it takes to stand out amongst the crowd, or is it just another lackluster device destined to drown in this sea of similarly lackluster smartphone offerings? Let’s find out.

OPPO A9 vs Realme 3 Pro vs Redmi Note 7 Pro: Price in India

The OPPO A9 is offered in only one storage configuration with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage that costs INR 15,490 in India. Meanwhile, both the Realme 3 Pro and Redmi Note 7 Pro costs INR 13,999 for their 4GB RAM + 64GB base models. An upgrade to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for both these devices costs INR 16,999.

OPPO A9 vs Realme 3 Pro vs Redmi Note 7 Pro: Design, Display

All three phones in this comparison offer their own versions of gradient rear panel design with rear-mounted fingerprint scanners alongside waterdrop notches over their screens. The Note 7 Pro, however, manages to pull slightly ahead thanks to its use of Gorilla Glass 5 on both the front and the back, as well as the integration of a USB Type-C charging port. The other two phones, on the other hand, only come with Gorilla Glass 5 over their display, and make use of the dated microUSB standard for charging.

There isn’t a lot to critique about the display of these three phones as all of them offer LCD panel with FHD+ resolutions that measure about the same diagonally.

OPPO A9 vs Realme 3 Pro vs Redmi Note 7 Pro: Performance

When it comes to raw performance, the OPPO A9’s Helio P70 falls just a bit short. Both the Realme 3 Pro’s Snapdragon 710 and Redmi Note 7 Pro’s Snapdragon 675 offer quantifiably better CPU and GPU performance. It is difficult to pick a clear winner between the two Qualcomm chipset, though, as the SDM 710 offers a slightly better GPU, while the SDM 675 performs marginally better in CPU tests.

OPPO A9 vs Realme 3 Pro vs Redmi Note 7 Pro: Camera

Numerous camera comparison tests of the Redmi Note 7 Pro and Realme 3 Pro have been performed where both phones have offered comparable performance despite the difference in their image sensor sizes and resolutions. The Redmi Note 7 Pro gets a 48MP + 5MP rear camera setup where the primary lens generally takes 12MP shots. Then Realme 3 Pro comes with a 16MP + 5MP rear imaging setup that is capable of recording 4K 30fps (a feature the Redmi Note 7 Pro also possesses). As for the OPPO A9, a 16MP + 2MP dual rear camera setup has been provided, albeit with video recording capped at 1080p resolution.

For selfies, the Realme 3 Pro comes with a 25MP front camera, the OPPO A9 gets a 16MP camera, and the Note 7 Pro comes with a 13MP sensor.

OPPO A9 vs Realme 3 Pro vs Redmi Note 7 Pro: Battery Life

The OPPO A9’s battery measures 4020mAh, the Realme 3 Pro’s measures 4045mAh, and the Redmi Note 7 Pro’s measures 4000mAh. Since all three phone’s battery sizes are so similar, so should be their overall battery lives. With that said, both the Realme and Xiaomi phones offer their own iteration of fast charging tech, while the OPPO A9 lacks any such functionality.

OPPO A9 vs Realme 3 Pro vs Redmi Note 7 Pro: Verdict

All in all, the OPPO A9 proved to be a formidable contender, but unfortunately, it falls short in quite a few aspects. It almost feels like OPPO (Realme’s parent brand) ended up making a slightly downgraded version of the Realme 3 Pro and is trying to sell it for about the same price.  While OPPO A9’s rear camera is almost on par with that of the Realme 3 Pro, it lacks 4K video recording support. While its battery is about as large as its competitors, the lack of fast charging support and the use of microUSB port are disappointing. And while the handset comes with a decent mid-range chipset, it is just not as powerful as those of its rivals.

In a time when both the Realme 3 Pro and Redmi Note 7 Pro are readily available for purchase, there is no real reason to compromise and go with the OPPO A9.
