OPPO has finally launched its first R series smartphone in India, the impressive R17 Pro. The mid-range Android smartphone was first launched in China in August this year, alongside the standard R17. While it shares most key features with the R17, the Pro variant offers a more impressive triple-camera setup at the rear and runs on a more powerful chipset as well. The smartphone will take on smartphones like the OnePlus 6T and the Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) in the country. Since all three smartphones fall under the same segment, we are going to be comparing them against each other and find out which one is the most worthy of your hard-earned cash.
OPPO R17 Pro vs OnePlus 6T vs Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018): Price in India
The OPPO R17 Pro has been priced at INR 45,990 in India. It is available only in a single memory configuration with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. OnePlus 6T, on the other hand, is available in three variants in India. The base variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage is priced at INR 37,999, while the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage variant is priced at INR 41,999. The top-end configuration with 8GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage costs INR 45,999. Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) is priced at INR 36,990 in India for the 6GB RAM variant and INR 39,990 for the 8GB RAM variant. Needless to say, it is the OnePlus 6T that offers the best value for money.
OPPO R17 Pro vs OnePlus 6T vs Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018): Build, Display
The OPPO R17 Pro comes with a 6.4-inch AMOLED display featuring a waterdrop notch at the top. It offers 1080 x 2340 pixels Full HD+ resolution with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protection on top. Thanks to the waterdrop notch, the smartphone boasts an impressive 91.5% screen-to-body ratio.
OnePlus 6T sports a 6.41-inch Optic AMOLED display with 1080 x 2340 pixels Full HD+ resolution and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Just like the R17 Pro, the OnePlus 6T display is protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 6. While it has a similar waterdrop notch as the R17 Pro, it isn’t quite as impressive in terms of the screen-to-body ratio. Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) features a slightly smaller 6.3-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080 x 2220 pixels Full HD+ resolution and an 18.5:9 aspect ratio. Since it does not come with a notch, the Galaxy A9 (2018) has a lower screen-to-body ratio than its rivals. The OPPO R17 and the OnePlus 6T definitely have the edge here.
OPPO R17 Pro vs OnePlus 6T vs Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018): Hardware, Performance
The OPPO R17 Pro is powered by a 10nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 octa-core processor clocked at 2.2 GHz with an Adreno 616 GPU. OPPO has coupled the powerful mid-range chipset with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.
The OnePlus 6T runs on Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor clocked at 2.8 GHz with an Adreno 630 GPU. It is available with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Unlike the OPPO handset, however, the OnePlus 6T does not support memory expansion. Samsung’s Galaxy A9 (2018) runs on a 14nm Snapdragon 660 AIE processor clocked at 2.2 GHz with an Adreno 512 GPU. It packs up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The Galaxy A9 (2018) is the only smartphone in this group to offer a microSD card slot for further storage expansion. However, it is quite clear that the OnePlus 6T is the clear winner when it comes to performance.
OPPO R17 Pro vs OnePlus 6T vs Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018): Camera
The OPPO R17 Pro boasts an impressive triple-camera setup at the rear with a 12MP primary sensor, 20MP secondary sensor, and a TOF 3D stereo camera. For superior low-light performance, the primary 12MP snapper at the rear offers an f1.5/f2.4 Smart Aperture system that automatically widens in low-light conditions, allowing more light rays to enter the sensor. The sensor also boasts optical image stabilization, large 1.4um pixel size, and Dual Pixel PDAF. For selfies, the R17 Pro features a 25MP selfie snapper with an f/2.0 aperture.
OnePlus’ latest flagship features the same 16MP + 20MP dual-camera setup at the rear as the OnePlus 6. The primary 16MP snapper comes with OIS, PDAF, and an f/1.7 aperture lens. While the hardware is identical, the OnePlus 6T comes with a few new software features like Nightscape for improved low-light photography and intelligent scene recognition. On the front, it features a 16MP selfie snapper with an f/2.0 aperture. Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) is the world’s first smartphone to sport a quad-camera setup at the rear. It features a 24MP + 8MP + 10MP + 5MP setup at the rear and a 24MP selfie snapper on the front. While all three smartphones have impressive cameras, the OnePlus 6T has a slight edge over both its rivals in terms of overall camera performance.
OPPO R17 Pro vs OnePlus 6T vs Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018): Battery, OS
OPPO R17 Pro is fueled by a 3700mAh capacity battery with the company’s proprietary SuperVOOC Flash Charge technology, which is claimed to allow the smartphone to achieve 40% charge in just 10 minutes. OnePlus 6T also packs a 3700mAh capacity battery but offers slightly slower 20W Dash Charge support. Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) features a 3800mAh capacity battery with adaptive fast charging support.
When it comes to software, the OPPO handset ships with Android 8.1 Oreo-based ColorOS 5.2 out of the box. OnePlus 6T, on the other hand, runs Android Pie-based OxygenOS out of the box. Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) runs Android 8.0 Oreo operating system with the custom Samsung Experience UX running on top. While the OPPO R17 Pro has an edge over both the OnePlus 6T and Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) with its 50W fast charging support, the OnePlus 6T scores the win in the software department.
OPPO R17 Pro vs OnePlus 6T vs Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018): Verdict
The OPPO R17 Pro and Samsung Galaxy A9 (2018) no doubt offer a few very impressive features. However, as an overall package, the OnePlus 6T is definitely superior to both of them. That’s hardly surprising, though, as the OnePlus 6T is a proper flagship smartphone and not an upper mid-range offering.
