Google Photos’ Magic Eraser helps big time in removing unwanted objects but many users might not be aware if AI was involved in making those edits. With AI being such a prominent force in tech, Google is stepping up its transparency game and will now let people know if an image has been edited using AI. Here's a breakdown of what you should know.
Google Photos AI Edit Transparency
Google Photos is taking steps to increase transparency by displaying edit details directly in the metadata. Starting next week, this feature will appear in the metadata, alongside details like the file name, location, and backup status.
Additionally, the metadata will specify if an image includes elements from multiple photos using non-generative tools. For example, features like Best Take on the Pixel 8 and 9 or Add Me on the Pixel 9.
But Why is This Happening?
AI's potential is exciting, but Google is also mindful of the challenges it poses and is tackling these responsibly. Committed to transparency, Google will soon allow users to identify when AI edits are applied in Google Photos.
Furthermore, Google emphasises its efforts are just beginning. They plan to keep collecting feedback and explore additional solutions to enhance transparency regarding AI edits.
