Update: Google has confirmed that the Pixel 5a has not been cancelled, according to 9to5Google. The smartphone will launch later this year. However, it will only launch in the US and Japan.

Original story follows…

Google was expected to launch the Pixel 5a at the Google I/O 2021. Ahead of the launch, the renders and key specifications of Pixel 5a had leaked. The latest development might disappoint Pixel fans. Turns out, Google may have cancelled the launch of its upcoming smartphone. Tipster Jon Prosser claims that Google decided to cancel the smartphone’s launch due to the chip shortage. The global supply chain has been disrupted due to the shortage of chips used in smartphones and other electronic products. The device, if cancelled, will be the second major smartphone to get cancelled this year after the Samsung Galaxy Note 21 series. Let’s take a look at more details on the Google Pixel 5a launch getting scrapped.

Pixel 5a is not launching in 2021 and we have the chip shortage to blame

Google was rumoured to launch the Pixel 5a later this year. However, the latest leak suggests that the Pixel device is not launching this year.

According to tipster Jon Prosser, Google will not launch a new Pixel 5a smartphone this year. The smartphone, codenamed Barbet, was tipped to launch later this year. Recent leaks suggested that the device will launch at the Google I/O 2021. However, Prosser claims that the company has decided to ditch launching the Pixel 4a successor. The reason? Shortage of chips.

Prosser’s sources claim that the search engine giant has scrapped its plan of launching the smartphone due to the global chip shortage. Google had neither confirmed the Pixel 5a launch nor has said anything about launching one.

If the news is indeed true, the Google smartphone will join the Samsung Galaxy Note 21 series that became the victims of chip shortage and did not see a launch.

Not just smartphones, but even gaming consoles have been struggling to keep up with the demand. The supply chain has been hit due to no chip availability, resulting in no stocks.

Prosser states that Google will continue to sell the Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a 5G throughout 2021.
