What is Purple Cap in IPL?

The Purple Cap is a one-of-a-kind prize presented to bowlers in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Similar to the Purple Cap, the Purple Cap award was started in the inaugural season of IPL and continues to be one of the most prestigious awards in the tournament for bowlers. The Purple cap is given to the bowler who has taken the most wickets in the particular IPL season. And just like the Purple Cap, the Purple Cap can go to different players during the tournament if the bowler breaks the previous owner’s record. However, the Purple Cap is given after the Final match is over.

Rules for Getting Purple Cap in IPL

The rules for getting the purple cap in IPL are pretty straightforward. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The award is given to the IPL leading wicket-taker of that particular season.
  • The bowler who has taken the most wickets in the tournament gets the Purple cap, and he has to wear it during his team match.
  • If another bowler surpasses the runs of the original Purple cap holder, then the cap goes to the new bowler.
  • Even if an opposition bowler has surpassed his wickets, the Purple Cap owner who is fielding is allowed to wear the Cap until the end of the innings.
  • In the event of a tie, the bowler with a better economy rate receives the Purple Cap.
    The wickets taken during the Super Over are not counted for the Purple cap.

Yuzvendra Chahal was the leading wicket-taker in the IPL 2022 season. He played for Rajasthan Royals and took 27 wickets throughout the tournament with an economy of 7.75 and a strike rate of 15.1.

Harshal Patel – IPL 2021

Harshal Patel is one of the few Indian bowlers who took the maximum wickets in any IPL season. He shares this title with Dwayne Bravo, as both players have taken 32 wickets. Patel played for Royal Challengers Banglore, and in 2021, he took 32 wickets in 15 matches with an economy of 8.14.
