All Realme smartphones priced above Rs 15,000 will feature 5G connectivity going forward, according to company CEO, Madhav Sheth. The executive tweeted earlier today, making a “promise” to the brand’s followers and customers that all Realme phones above 15k will come with 5G connectivity. The company has been among the OEMs that have been pushing to get the tag of ferrying the most affordable 5G phone in India at the moment, and devices such as the Realme 8 5G have already offered 5G connectivity within the Rs 15,000 price point advertised by Sheth.
Along with this claim, Sheth also stated that the upcoming Realme GT, which is slated to be a flagship grade smartphone, will be launched in India “this quarter”, which essentially means any time between now and September. Sheth also stated that the Realme GT will be launched alongside “multiple GT products”, which may hint at Realme seeking to launch more smart home products and accessories with its ‘GT’ branding. The executive also stated that the BBK Electronics brand will expand its erstwhile Narzo series smartphones going forward as well, labelling it as a “democratiser of 5G.”
As a result, going forward, all Realme phones above 15k should feature an increasing range of budget and mid-range processors that come bundled with 5G connectivity modems. MediaTek has increased its 5G presence with its newer Dimensity series, while Qualcomm is also bringing 5G connectivity to more of its products. The move for all Realme phones above 15k to feature 5G connectivity may likely be replicated by other OEMs vying for market share in the mid-range smartphone market of India, including fellow BBK brand Oppo as well.
The move comes at a time when public 5G services in India are still a far-shot from launching commercially. While telecom operators Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have spoken about having indigenously developed their own 5G network technology stack and therefore being ready for deployment, it is not clear as to when might commercial 5G services begin in India, and how much would they cost. Nevertheless, smartphone buyers right now would do well to have 5G connectivity on their devices, making them ready to enjoy the latest connectivity standard when it eventually launches.
