It was just a few weeks ago that Samsung announced the release of two new image sensors to augment its existing 0.8-micrometer (μm) image sensor lineup. Of these, the one that made headlines was the 64-megapixel ISOCELL GW1 sensor. The second image sensor announced along with it was a 48-megapixel ISOCELL GM2 variant. With these launches, Samsung currently has a wide array of 0.8μm sensor range that goes from 20-megapixels to 64-megapixels. And it seems that Samsung Mobile would be the first vendor to use the new 64-megapixel sensor on a new device.

According to a report by ETNews, Samsung is likely to bring the new 64-megapixel sensor to its upcoming smartphone — the Samsung Galaxy A70s. As evident from its name, the Galaxy A70s is an updated version of the Galaxy A70 that was launched a few weeks ago here in India. If the news is true, the Samsung Galaxy A70s will become the first smartphone to feature a 64-megapixel camera sensor. Currently, smartphone image sensors available for consumers top out at 48-megapixels. In this space, Samsung competes with Sony’s IMX 586 sensor that is used on several devices currently on sale in India. Samsung’s older 48-megapixel ISOCELL GM1 sensor can be found on the recently launched Redmi Note 7s.

The new Samsung ISOCELl Bright GW1  sensor claims to offer excellent low light imaging capabilities along with support for real-time HDR. The sensor can also handle full HD slow-motion video recording. Earlier, there were speculations about the possibility of Samsung using this 64-megapixel sensor on the upcoming Note 10. That, however, might not happen if we are to go by the latest trends.

There is no word as to when the Samsung Galaxy A70s would be officially announced. What is expected, however, is that this phone would be identical to the Galaxy A70 in all aspects except this new camera sensor. Instead of the old 32-megapixel sensor, the A70s will get this new 64-megapixel sensor. This essentially means that the Galaxy A70s will also get the same 6.7-inch AMOLED panel with FullHD+ resolution, and the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 SoC that is used on the Galaxy A70. Other specifications of the Galaxy A70/A70s include the 32-megapixel front-facing camera, the 4,500 mAh battery with 25-watt fast charging support, and 6GB/128GB RAM/Storage options.
