It’s been a good six months since we first heard about a new M-series smartphone called the Samsung Galaxy M51. Digging into our archives, we spotted that the first reference to the M51 dates back to January 1 when we posted this article about the production of the handset commencing at Samsung’s Noida factory. Six months later, the Samsung Galaxy M51 remains as elusive as ever. In Samsungs defense, though, it can be argued that the past few months have been really challenging because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Following the phone’s first appearance, we followed up with a report in which renders of the M51 were leaked. This was followed by another news article that talked about the camera specs of the Galaxy M51. Today, more than a month later, we have come across a Geekbench listing that appears to be of the Galaxy M51. As seen in the screenshot below, this device bears the model number SM-M515F that prima facie appears to be of the M51.

Also clear from the screenshot above is that that the device in question comes with 8GB of RAM and that it runs Android 10. The processor details, however, remain murky. Looking at the name of the motherboard (sm6150), we initially inferred that the phone uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 chipset. However, this is already a dated SoC, and Samsung had previously launched the Galaxy M40 using the same chipset a while ago.

We then assumed it could be the Snapdragon 730 Soc, which has, in the past, appeared carrying the same nametag. However, we figured that the benchmark scores were a bit lower than what could be expected of the 730. At this point, therefore, we are refraining from naming a processor for this handset, although there is a hunch that we could be looking at the Snapdragon 720 here. But hey, this is just a calculated guess at best.

As mentioned earlier, we had previously reported about the possibility of the Samsung Galaxy M51 featuring a 6.5-inch AMOLED display with a punch hole cut out for the front-facing camera. This can, in fact, be seen if we take a look at the leaked renders of the device.

The primary rear-facing camera on the Samsung Galaxy M51 is likely to be based on Samsung’s own 64MP GW1 sensor. The handset is also rumored to feature a quad-camera setup at the rear, with all four of them housed within a rectangular camera array. The phone also reportedly features a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

While the appearance of the Samsung Galaxy M51 on Geekbench could signify an imminent announcement/launch of the device, we will wait for more details to emerge before declaring that a launch is on the cards.
