Shield TV gets compatible with more Google Home voice commands

The Nvidia Shield TV is a strange device as it comes with Chromecast built-in but does not have the support that most Assistant devices would have out of the box. With this new deeper integration, Shield TV is much more usable.

This week, Shield TV is getting more deep integration with Google Home devices, Nvidia announced today in an official blog post. Basically what this means is that you’ll be able to issue a number of new commands that were not possible earlier while basic ones were already working on the TV. Nvidia has listed a full sheet of the commands that can be issued but they’ve mixed it up with the old ones. The update will arrive to the TV this month itself and if you’re in a hurry, you can just restart your TV to get the new feature.

Google Assistant was already built into the Shield TV because it is Android TV. But from now on, you’ll be able to do more stuff with your Google Home/Assistant -powered speakers. The full list of command includes some pretty handy ones like turning on your tv by saying “Turn on Shield” or open an app by saying “Open [name of app] on SHIELD”. You will also be able to change the volume by simply saying “Increase/decrease volume on SHIELD”. The full list of commands is as below.

Shield TV

Basic Commands
“Turn on SHIELD”
“Turn off SHIELD”
“Open [name of app] on SHIELD”

Volume Control
“Set volume to 50% on SHIELD”
“Increase/decrease volume on SHIELD”
“Mute/unmute volume on SHIELD”

Playback Features
“Play [name of Netflix, HBO NOW, CBS, Viki, or Starz show] on SHIELD”
“Play [name of song] on [name of app] on SHIELD”
“Watch [name of channel] on YouTube TV on SHIELD”
“Play

on YouTube on SHIELD”
“Pause on SHIELD”
“Play on SHIELD”

Photos and Smart Home
“Show me my pictures from Egypt on SHIELD”
“Show me my pictures from last weekend on SHIELD”
“Dim the lights”
“Set the temperature to 72 degrees”

Also, Assistant is on Sheild TV as well, so you can just talk directly to the Shield TV to do these things as well. The Nvidia Shield TV is, in the opinion of many, the best Android TV on the market right now. With the integration of Google Home, the list of features gets even more impressive, especially since its remote isn’t that good.
