Qualcomm has announced two new mobile platforms. The company has launched the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC alongside the new Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. The 8+ Gen 1 SoC is the more premium and powerful offering among the two. It is the successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which was unveiled late last year.

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC offers a selection of high-end, in-demand features and technologies. It enabled “epic mobile gaming, high-speed connectivity, intelligent entertainment and larger-than-life capture,” according to Qualcomm. Let’s take a look at the newly-launched Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC features and details announced.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC Features

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC is a successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. It comes with some minor improvements over its predecessor. Qualcomm claims that the new flagship chipset offers a 10 per cent improvement in CPU and GPU performance while consuming 30 per cent less power. This should result in about 60 minutes of extra, smooth gameplay. The octa-core chipset has a peak clock speed of 3.2GHz.

The chipset brings Snapdragon Sight’s latest technologies like 8K HDR video recording, capturing 200MP images or recording 108MP videos through a single camera at 30 fps with zero shutter lag.

The 5G flagship processor is also said to deliver 20 per cent better AI-related performance, courtesy of the new 7th-gen Qualcomm AI Engine. With the help of the X65 5G modem, the chipset supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G. It also supports WiFi 6, WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, etc.

The likes of Xiaomi, Realme, Asus, Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, iQOO, Honor, Asus, etc., will launch smartphones with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoC starting Q3 2022.

Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC

Qualcomm states that the new 7 series chip brings high-end, in-demand features. The new chipset supports select Snapdragon Elite Gaming features, such as  Adreno Frame Motion Engine for doubling the frame rate and maintaining the same power consumption.

The chipset has a peak clock speed of 2.4GHz. The new improved GPU also offers 20 per cent faster graphics rendering. Qualcomm stated that the new Snapdragon 7 series chipset also supports Qualcomm Spectra triple ISP, allowing users to shoot simultaneously from three cameras or click 200MP images.

The chipset supports 5G and has the 4th-generation X62 modem. Companies like Oppo, Xiaomi and Honor have already confirmed the launch of new smartphones with Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC.

Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Platform

Qualcomm also unveiled its new Snapdragon XR2 platform alongside the new mobile platforms. The company unveiled its new AR glass that packs the new XR2 platform. The newer version is completely wireless and 40 per cent thinner. It has dual 0.49-inch micro-OLED displays with a 90Hz refresh rate support.

The glass also features two 6DoF tracking cameras and one RGB camera. Despite all that hardware, the AR Glass weighs just 115 grams.

To achieve truly immersive AR experiences, the device obtains < 3ms latency between the smartphone and AR glass. The new glass also supports WiFi 6/ 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity.
