Sony launched its new flagship smartphone yesterday at the MWC event – the Xperia 1. This new smartphone is a huge leap over its predecessor in almost every aspect. The Sony Xperia 1 brings with it the flagship processor from Qualcomm, an advanced camera system, and a completely new design. It even comes with a few industry-first features in the display, camera, and software sections. Although the device has a lot to offer, we think these are its top five features.
OLED Screen with 21:9 Aspect Ratio, 4K Resolution, and HDR
The Sony Xperia 1 is the first smartphone in the industry to feature a 21:9 aspect ratio display. For those who do not know, the 21:9 aspect ratio display is taller than an 18:9 aspect ratio display. Because the screen is taller, it allows the users to see much more content while scrolling webpages and browsing through social media. Not only that, the Xperia 1’s display is also perfect for watching movies because most of the movies are shot in 21:9 aspect ratio.
Xperia 1’s display uses OLED technology. Hence, it can show true blacks, and can offer a vibrant color reproduction, both of them will make the content on the display look much more appealing to the eyes. The display is also HDR capable, meaning that if you watch HDR content on it, you can enjoy a wider dynamic range and more colors, which will further enhance the viewing experience. Lastly, the display has 4K resolution, which in my opinion is not very beneficial, but then Xperia 1 has it, and I think the device deserves some credit for it.
Triple-camera with OIS
The Xperia 1 is the first smartphone from the brand to feature a triple-camera setup. All three cameras have 12-megapixels resolution. With the help of these three cameras, users can now capture wide-angle and telephoto images in addition to the conventional images. What is even better is that the conventional camera sensor and the telephoto camera sensor feature OIS (first for a Sony smartphone), which will not only help the camera capture blur-free images but it will also aid the camera in capturing brighter and more detailed pictures in lowlight conditions. In addition to the great camera hardware, the Sony Xperia 1 also features 960fps super-slow motion, and 4K HDR video recording.
Snapdragon 855 Processor
The Sony Xperia 1 comes with the latest flagship SoC from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 855. This is the same chipset that most other flagship smartphones of 2019 use. It has four high-performance CPU cores, four power-efficient CPU cores, and Adreno 640 GPU. Currently, Snapdragon 855 is one of the most powerful smartphone processors in the market. Moreover, the Snapdragon 855 can output 60 frames per second throughtout the UI even on screens with 4K resolution, which means it can drive the 4K display of the Xperia 1 without any hiccups. There is no better processor the Xperia 1 could have had.
To match with the brilliant 21:9 Cinematic Display, the Sony Xperia 1 comes with stereo speakers – one at the top (earpiece doubles up as a speaker) and one at the bottom. Stereo speakers offer far better sound quality and also a louder volume compared to a mono-channel speaker. Therefore, you get an enhanced multimedia experience. What’s even better is that these speakers are mated to the same Dynamic Vibration System that we saw on the Xperia XZ3. The Dynamic Vibration System vibrates the device in synchronization with the sound to make the multimedia consumption more immersive.
Completely New Design with Water and Dust Resistance
When it comes to design, the Xperia 1 is a huge leap over its predecessor. Gone is the boring boxy design that we saw on the Xperia XZ3. This new design is curvier, which makes the device look more attractive. And even with those curves, the device still manages to look bold.
What’s the use of a beautiful design if it is not durable, right? Well, Sony Xperia 1 has got you covered there too. It features a metal body with Gorilla Glass 6 at the front and back, making it resistant to impacts more than ever. Moreover, it even has IP68 certified water and dust resistance, giving you complete peace of mind.
Sony Xperia 1 Price and Availability
The Sony Xperia 1 will be available in the US starting from Spring this year. Sony has not announced the availability details for other regions yet. The brand has also not revealed the pricing details. However, rumors are, the Xperia 1 will be priced somewhere around $899 in the US.
Sony has always made its flagship smartphone available in the India market, and therefore, we think the Xperia 1 will also launch the country. When? Well, in my opinion, sometime after it goes on sale in the US, so June-July maybe.
