Popular food ordering and delivery platform Swiggy expanded its branches to 16 new cities in the country. The new cities include: Thrissur, Tirupur, Warangal, Aurangabad, Agra, Mangalore, Manipal, Jalandhar, Trichy, Udaipur, Amritsar, Varanasi, Bhubaneshwar, Vellore, Thiruvananthapuram and Kota.
The growing demand in Tier 2 and 3 cities for quality food, convenience and accessibility have prompted the move. Commenting on the new development, Swiggy COO Vivek Sunder said, “One of the reasons for the expansion across the country is because of the strong consumer demand that we have witnessed through thousands of Swiggy app downloads in cities where we were not even present.” Prior to this, Swiggy services were present in 28 cities across the country.
Swiggy has outmuscled Foodpanda and Tiny Owl in just four years to become a household name among Indian consumers by providing them with the best food delivery platform in the country. In September, Swiggy expanded to Dehradun, Puducherry, Mysore, Vijayawada, Nashik, Guwahati, Kanpur and Ludhiana, with ties to 1,200 restaurants. In the same month, Mint reported that Swiggy was in talks to raise USD 700 million from Tencent Holdings (and possibly Softbank), despite being ‘well funded’, based on the same report.
The company also played strategic cards to keep consumers hooked to avail its services. Apart from dishing out day-to-day offers and discounts on food, the company also introduced a membership plan called Swiggy Super with one and three-month subscription plans back in July. At that time, Swiggy claimed that the membership had been rolled out to 200,000 users in seven cities out of its now 44 cities. Swiggy Super memberships during the launch were available for introductory prices of INR 49 for one month and INR 129 for three months. As a Swiggy Super member, you get unlimited free deliveries at any time, no surge fee and a dedicated customer care team. Recently, Zomato too introduced its own loyalty program ‘Piggybank’ which has crossed 1 million users recently.
Founded in 2014, Swiggy currently has over 40,000 restaurant partners and is spread across 44 cities in the country.
