Apple is reportedly planning to make the iPhone 14 in India in the next two months or so. The company will partner with suppliers to make its new iPhone in India a lot sooner than the usual timeline to reduce its reliance on China as the primary manufacturer of iPhones worldwide. Apple has a few partners in India, such as Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron, who manufacture several iPhones for the brand. It looks like a leading Indian conglomerate, the Tata Group, might also make the Apple iPhone soon in India.
According to a new report by Bloomberg, the Tata Group is in talks with Taiwanese supplier Wistron, which is one of Apple’s key suppliers. The report states that Tata is in talks with Wistron to establish an electronics manufacturing joint venture plant and assemble the iPhone.
Tata Group Could Become First Indian Company to Make iPhone
The Tata Group is a renowned and trusted brand in India. The company makes salt, cars, electric vehicles and even software. Tata’s subsidiary Infiniti Retail also owns Croma, a leading retail chain of consumer electronics items. If Tata starts manufacturing the iPhone in India, it will help the company set itself as a new force in technology manufacturing. Tata could also become the first Indian company to assemble the iPhone in India. Not just for the company but it would also work as a major boost for India as the country is inviting global companies to make in India and export to other countries.
The report stated that the company wants to tap Wistron’s expertise in product development, supply chain and assembly. The structure of the deal and details such as shareholdings are yet to be finalised. It could be possible that Tata buys some equity in Wistron’s India operations. Alternatively, Tata could also set up a new assembly plant. There is also a possibility of the company exciting both options. It is unknown if Apple is aware of the Tata Group in talks with Wistron as the company has strict quality control measures for its product assembly.
Apple has been looking for alternate manufacturing sites to reduce reliance on China, where manufacturing hubs have taken a hit due to frequent lockdowns. The company is reportedly working with its India-based suppliers to make the iPhone 14 in the country in the next 2-3 months.
