CD Projekt Red, the studio behind The Witcher franchise, has confirmed the original game will receive a remake on Unreal Engine 5. Working alongside CD Projekt Red is Fool’s Theory, a AAA studio from Poland. Details on the remake are still sparse as the studio hasn’t divulged much about the release window or gameplay improvements in the remake.

The original Witcher game kicked things off for not just the franchise, but for studio CD Projekt Red, and helped them establish themselves as one of the boldest voices in game dev. The Witcher is a deeply-beloved game that, despite its outdated controls and mechanics, still has a massive fanbase within the gaming community.

The game was originally developed on CDPR’s proprietary REDEngine, but it looks like the studio might be moving away from it soon. It was confirmed earlier that the studio will be working on new games in the Witcher franchise on the Unreal Engine 5.

“Canis Majoris” Confirmed as The Witcher Remake on Unreal Engine 5

There is a growing sense of fatigue within the gaming community regarding remakes of iconic games as many feel that there are only a handful of games that warrant a full remake at this point. However, given that the original Witcher is present only on PC and hasn’t necessarily aged all that well according to modern gaming standards – perhaps a remake is in order.

The studio seems to be shifting the development of all its major titles to Unreal Engine 5 and it will be interesting to see if this carries over to Cyberpunk as well. The studio has pretty much confirmed a new game in the series and given the issues the studio ran into with development on RedEngine, maybe the next game might just be built on Unreal Engine 5.

The new engine has been the talk of town for some time now and players cannot wait to see the kind of games it will turn out. Several major studios are working on projects that are scheduled to come out in the next couple of years.

The Matrix: Unreal Engine 5 Experience showcased just how powerful the engine is and the kind of quality games it can help produce. While the showcase was only a small taste of what the engine is capable of – fans were quite impressed, to say the least.

CDPR is one of the most interesting developers in the business right now and despite their recent stumbles with the Cyberpunk 2077 launch – the studio has found its way back on its feet. Fans cannot wait to see what the studio has in store for them over the next few years.
