Grand Theft Auto is the most popular game series of all time. Publisher Take Two Interactive even called GTA “the most successful, iconic, and critically acclaimed brands in all of entertainment” after selling over 375 million copies across titles.

We might not see Grand Theft Auto VI anytime soon. New rumours suggest that we will have to wait until 2025 for the highly anticipated launch of GTA 6. In the meantime, if you can’t wait till that, you can take a trip down memory lane and play the best GTA games for PC.

On this page, we will rank the best Grand Theft Auto games for PC. We’re going to rank only the PC titles of the GTA series, essentially the five main titles in GTA series, and the 3D universe of the franchise. We did not include the older 2D games GTA and GTA 2 in this list.

We’ve ranked the games from #1 to #5, but make no mistake, the #5 game in the list is still a masterpiece; it isn’t any worse. With that out of the way, let us check out the list of Top GTA PC Games list for 2023!

Top GTA PC Games in 2023

Grand Theft Auto V

GTA V is the pinnacle of the Grand Theft Auto series; it has an extraordinary scope and is created with utmost attention to detail.

It is the most technically accomplished, and no other open-world game comes close to its character development and story are some of the best we see in any game.

The in-game mechanics are also some of the best. Switching between three characters and co-oping for various missions brings a fresh new aspect to the franchise.

We’re back again at Los Santos, but it’s the current times, and you play as Michael, a retired bank robber, Trevor, a criminal and Michael’s best friend and Franklin, an ex-gangster. You play as these three characters, which can be switched between any time, off mission. Some missions require all three of them, and some don’t. In some missions, it is mandatory to switch between the characters, but some do not. When not on a mission, the characters go on with their daily lives doing their own thing.

GTA Online in GTA V offers a different experience like nothing else, making use of the open-world multiplayer to the fullest. It has its quirks, but it’s supremely enjoyable.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Ah sh*t, here we go again!

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was the best game until GTA V came around. It still holds itself against the latest GTA and most other modern games. It might not hold up against the modern games in terms of graphic quality, but the story, the missions, the mechanics and the character building have stood the test of time.

Grand Theft Auto III

Grand Theft Auto III is the first game in the GTA franchise to come with a fully 3D world. The basics of everything in the newer GTA games first appeared in GTA III. New York Times called it “One of the most influential and successful games ever made”, rightfully so, as it not only became the blueprint for every GTA game that came after it, it also became the blueprint for every open-world game that exists now.

You play Claude, a silent criminal whose girlfriend betrayed him during a bank heist. Claude starts working for different crime bosses in Liberty City, which is touted as the worst place in America. Even though it is launched before San Andreas, it is chronologically set after it.

You might be surprised to find GTA IV somewhat below this list; that’s not because it wasn’t good; it’s because the trio of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas was better than it.

It is set in 2008, and you play Niko Bellic, an Eastern European ex-soldier and former human trafficker. He arrives in Liberty City aboard a cargo ship to escape his criminal past, pursue the American dream, and search for the man who betrayed him and his unit 10 years ago.
