Apple has announced new watchOS 8 features at WWDC 2021. The new software update for eligible Apple Watch devices releases later this year. It comes with many new health and fitness-related features. The new OS brings updates to Wallet and Home apps on the Watch. It also introduces new workout types and some more features.

Apple Watch users can soon securely unlock their car from a distance and start it from the driver’s seat. Users can also add keys for their home, office, and hotel to Wallet, and tap their Apple Watch to unlock. Some of these features are likely to be available first in the US.

The new watchOS update also introduces two new workout types called Tai Chi and Pilates. Apple claims that these workout types are supported by powerful, validated custom-built heart rate and motion algorithms to provide users with accurate metrics.

In addition to these workout modes, Apple has also introduced a new Mindfulness app for the Watch. It replaces the Breathe app and also comes with a new session type called Reflect. It offers a mindful intention to focus on for as little as one minute that can be done anywhere and at any time.

Portrait watch faces are making their way to watchOS. The Photos app is also redesigned. It offers users new ways to view and navigate collections. Memories and featured photos now sync to Apple Watch. Photos can also be shared through Messages and Mail with the new Share Sheet in watchOS 8.

Apple is making some changes to the way users communicate on the Apple Watch. They can combine the use of Scribble, dictation, and emoji within the same message. Users can also add GIFs to their messages on Apple Watch.
