Withings usually doesn’t dabble in fitness accessories as its main focus is on analogue hybrid smartwatches. However, the former Nokia subsidiary has just announced that Withings Pulse HR, a premium fitness tracker which seems to be a follow up of the original Withings Pulse launched in 2013. The Withings Pulse HR isn’t cheap as it has a $130 price tag and it is right up there with the likes of the Fitbit Charge 3 and Garmin Vivosmart 4. Its key features include an OLED display, water resistance, GPS tracking, stainless steel body, and a 20-day battery life.
Since the Withings Pulse HR is a fitness tracker primarily, it comes packed with all the goods expected from a device like this. For heart rate sensing, which is another of the band’s key features, it has a standard PPG (photoplethysmography) heart rate sensor. It measures heart rate throughout the day every 10 minutes and constantly during activity. There’s a built-in GPS for tracking your runs if you don’t want to keep your heavy phone with you during that period of activity. The Withings Pulse HR can track up to 30 different activities which include swimming, different kind of sports and even sleep.
The Pulse HR is water resistant up to 5 meters (5 ATM) which is vital for activities like swimming. The band has a stellar battery life of 20 days which is better than the aforementioned competitors. In terms of design, it has more of a generic feel to it as opposed to what we’ve been used to from Withings in terms of its smartwatches.
The Pulse HR has its own proprietary software called OS2 and to monitor daily activities, users will need the accompanying Health Mate app. The app displays health data, shows your daily progress, and sends personalized advice to its users. It can be then downloaded from Apple’s App Store and Google’s Play Store. Apart from fitness-related info, the OLED display of the band also shows basic notifications such as calls, texts, events and other apps as well.
The Withings Pulse HR is currently up for pre-order currently only in Black on Amazon and sale starts from December 5. Additional wristband colour options will be available starting January 2019.
