Along with its concept smartphone the Mi Mix Alpha, Xiaomi also introduced the Mi 9 Pro 5G handset. While the Mi Mix Alpha is more of an experimental affair, the Mi 9 Pro 5G is Xiaomi’s OnePlus challenger. The handset has a premium design with a metal frame sandwiched between glass panels. Like most modern smartphones, the Mi 9 Pro 5G will form an interesting reflective pattern on its back. Users will get to choose from ‘dream white’ and ‘titanium black’. And of course, it is loaded with powerful hardware.

Xiaomi‘s latest phone features a 6.4-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with thin-bezels. It does, however, sport a waterdrop notch on its forehead. A layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 6 protects the screen against the scratches. In terms of firepower, Xiaomi has gone all guns blazing. The Mi 9 Pro 5G comes loaded with Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 855 Plus chip. To offer sustained performance, the phone relies on a vapor chamber module. As per the company, it can bring down the processor’s core temperature by over 10 degrees Celcius. Depending on the model, the phone will pack in either 8 GB or 12 GB RAM. The base variant comes with 128 GB of internal storage, the next one packs in 256 GB, while the top model offers a whopping 512 GB of storage.
The phone is equipped with the Snapdragon X50 5G modem to offer 5G connectivity. The Chinese company claims that the handset has a seven antenna design to offer superior network reception. It is said to achieve the download speeds peaking at 2.02 Gbps in lab conditions and up to 1.78 Gbps in the field test, That’s 10 times more than a regular 4G device.
For the shutterbugs, the Mi 9 Pro 5G comes with a triple camera setup at the back. It comprises of a 48 MP main camera backed by Sony’s IMX586 image sensor, a 16 MP wide-angle camera, and a 12 MP telephoto lens. It can record 4K videos at 60 fps. For the selfies, you get a 20 MP front-facing shooter. Other features include dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, A-GPS (network assisted), NFC, and USB Type-C port. Xiaomi has ditched the 3.5 mm headphones jack. The phone houses a 4,000 mAh battery with 45 W fast charging technology. The company has also beefed-up the wireless (induction) charging capabilities to 30 W. Moreover, there’s a reverse charging feature that lets you juice-up accessories and other phones at 10 W output. On the software side of things, the Mi 9 Pro 5G runs Android 9.0 Pie with MIUI 10 on top.

The phone is up for pre-order in China starting today. Shipping is expected to commence from September 27. The base model with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage is pegged at 3,699 yuan (Approx. Rs 37,000). The Mi 9 Pro 5G with 8 GB RAM with 256 GB storage will set you to cost you 3,799 yuan (Approx. Rs 38,000). The 12 GB RAM variant with Mi 256 GB storage is priced at 4,099 yuan (Approx. Rs 41,000). Finally, the top model with 12 GB RAM and 512 GB storage has the asking price of 4,299 yuan ( Approx. Rs 43,000).
