Xiaomi Teases a Big Announcement Tomorrow, Could be the 48MP Camera Phone

Xiaomi may announce its first Redmi smartphone with a 48MP rear camera in China tomorrow.

Xiaomi today released a new poster teasing a launch event that will be held in China tomorrow. While the poster does not give us any clue regarding the product that will be announced tomorrow, it is being speculated that Xiaomi may unveil its first smartphone with a 48MP rear camera at the event.

First Xiaomi Redmi Series Smartphone With 48MP Camera to Go Official Tomorrow?

An upcoming smartphone with a 48MP primary camera was teased by Xiaomi on its Weibo page last month. The company has already confirmed that the device would be launched in January, so there is certainly a good chance that it will indeed be the star of the event that is being held in China tomorrow.

The world’s first smartphone with a 48MP camera was launched by Huawei last month. In addition to the Nova 4, Huawei sub-brand Honor has also released the Honor V20 with the same 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor. However, it remains to be seen if Xiaomi is using the same Sony IMX586 sensor or a similar sensor from a different manufacturer. Unlike the Huawei Nova 4 and Honor V20, Xiaomi’s first smartphone with a 48MP sensor is expected to be a budget-friendly offering. Rumors suggest the smartphone could be priced around the CNY 1,000 mark, which translates to INR 10,200 approximately based on the current exchange rate. Rumors also suggest the handset may feature an In-display camera.

Sadly, almost nothing is currently known regarding the hardware specifications of the Xiaomi Redmi series smartphone with a 48MP main snapper. However, very few chipsets actually support camera sensors with such a high resolution. One of the few mid-range processors that support image sensors up to 48MP resolution is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675, which was announced by the chipmaker in October last year. The Snapdragon 675 is manufactured on an 11nm LPP process and utilizes Qualcomm’s semi-custom Kryo 460 CPU cores. It features two Kryo 460 Gold cores clocked at up to 2.0 GHz and six A55-based Silver cores clocked at up to 1.7 GHz. Taking care of the graphics processing is an Adreno 612 GPU. Since Xiaomi has not revealed any details so far, all we can do is wait until tomorrow to find out more.
