Micromax Xl2 Review: Low budget Phablet
By Asher, 57 months ago
I bought the Micromax Xl2 in the month of December. I wanted to buy a 5.5 inch phablet at 7k and this was the only phone available at that range. I faced certain problems and felt disappointed about my choice, but then I got used to it. I’ll brief about my experience with the phone in this review. Look and Feel: Though it is a budget device, it actually doesn’t look like one. Yes, it has brilliant looks. Micromax has done a great job in designing the phone. The phone feels solid with no creaky sounds. The chrome the surrounds the body adds to the elegance of the phone. It’s also not too heavy at 150 grams (lighter than note 4). The speakers are located below the battery. I found it very hard to pull off the battery cover at first but then I got used to it. Only the first sim supports 3G. The second sim supports 2G and is swappable. The phone has a 5.5 inch QHD display with 200 ppi which is good for reading documents and watching movies. The viewing angles are also good but reflective. Camera: There is a 5 megapixel camera at the back and a 0.3 mp cam in the front. The back camera is very good and takes photos with good colours. But when zoomed in the photos look like water painting (as in low end Samsung phones). Also there is a bug in the phone which eats up the battery within an hour when you use the camera (disappointed). Surely this is not a phone for photographers. The videos are recorded in HD but in the 3gp format only. Software and Performance: The phone runs on kitkat 4.4.2 version of android. Micromax had installed a launcher (launcher 3) which is similar to the default kitkat google launcher with google now. Anyway, you can install your favourite launcher over it. The performance is very fluid with no lags (thanks to the 1.2ghz quad core chip with 1GB Ram) but when there is more than 3 apps in the background you can feel the system getting slow. Swiftkey keyboard comes preinstalled but you can change the Google keyboard or reverie keyboard (Multi Language, also pre installed) as default. The main drawback is that the phone comes pre installed with quite a large amount of bloatware (3 trial games, Mad, Kingsoft office, Mistore, opera mini, swiftkey, reverie, hike, bookmyshow) which cannot be updated or uninstalled. Also there is a bloatware called software update (pre installed) which automatically downloads and installs apps without any permission of the user. Of the 850 mb for apps you only get 450mb for apps which makes installing large games not possible. You could only install some 20 apps and 2 games (like me). By moving apps to sd card (shown wrongly as phone storage in the system), 5 more apps could be installed because all data cannot be moved to external storage. It doesn’t support OTG. Wi-Fi works well but it takes time to render pages and zooming in and out is not at all smooth. Battery: Being a large screen phone it needs a large battery. Micromax had gone for a 2500mah removable which survives a day usage with normal usage but with heavy usage the battery drains within 6 hours. With continuous 3g browsing or camera use the phone heats up considerably and lasts just 3 hours. I am using only a single sim to make the phone last at least a day. I’ll recommend this phone for first time android users who need a blend of phone and tablet just for reading, browsing and casual usage. If you are a super user please buy something else.(read more)
