Nothing has announced Nothing OS 5.0, its latest Android-based software update. It brings a new refreshed design, new personalisation features, and more AI capabilities. The update is based on Android 17 and will begin rolling out in open beta starting August 26, initially for the Nothing Phone (3). The general release of the same is expected somewhere around October this year, and it will arrive for other Nothing models a few weeks after.
Refreshed design and UI changes
Nothing OS 5.0 brings to us a redesigned interface while retaining its minimal, "pure Android" approach. With this update you are getting a new home screen theme with transparent elements across widgets and system apps, along with an adaptive colour system that changes based on the user's wallpaper.
Major apps including Settings, Camera and Gallery have been updated with these new layouts, animations and iconography. The system also adopts the Geist typeface, along with refinements to spacing, blur effects and visual consistency across the UI.
Personalisation and Glyph updates
With this new upgrade, you are also getting new lock screen clock styles and improved home screen editing, including the ability to move multiple apps and widgets at once. Two new widgets: Collector and Away Time. This focuses on visual customisation and tracking screen usage.
Nothing has also introduced a dedicated app for the Glyph Interface. This combines lighting controls, sounds, and schedules. A new Glyph Timer widget allows users to start timers directly from the home screen.
Performance and AI features
Nothing OS 5.0 includes improvements to system performance, including better memory management, smoother animations and enhanced app responsiveness. Bluetooth controls in Quick Settings have also been redesigned for easier access.
On the AI front, the update expands Essential Voice for improved transcription and also introduces updates to Essential Space, including Smart Collections and support for third-party AI tools. A new Essential Apps Builder also lets users create simple AI-powered tools directly on-device.
Nothing OS 5.0 Availability
The open beta rollout begins August 26 for the Nothing Phone (3) first, with a wider rollout planned in phases across other devices. According to the company's rollout timeline, models including the Phone (4a) series and Phone (3a) series will receive the beta in September, followed by devices like the Phone (2a) and Phone (2a) Plus in October.
The stable rollout is expected to begin from mid-October, starting with newer models and gradually expanding to older devices through November and December. The upcoming Phone (4b) and CMF Phone 2 Pro are also said to receive the update at a later stage.
Nothing says that the rollout timelines may vary by region and carrier. Stay tuned for a detailed review of this new update!
