Nothing has started the general rollout of Nothing OS 5.0, its biggest software update yet, bringing more than 80 updates across design, personalisation, performance and artificial intelligence. It is built on Android 17; the update introduces a redesigned home screen, new lock screen customisation options, performance improvements and expanded AI features.
Nothing OS 5.0 Features
Nothing OS 5.0 introduces a refreshed home screen with transparent design elements across widgets and the search bar. The interface also features an adaptive colour system that takes cues from the user's wallpaper to create a more consistent look across the home screen. The update builds on the visual changes introduced in the open beta, including refreshed icons, updated spacing and animations across the status bar, Settings, Camera and Gallery. Nothing has also introduced its Geist typeface and more consistent visual elements throughout the operating system.
Home screen editing has been improved, allowing users to move multiple apps and widgets at once. New widgets include Collector, which lets users create visual collections of their favourite objects, and Away Time, which tracks time spent away from the screen.
Nothing OS 5.0 adds a Micrographics clock face inspired by hardware design. It brings together the date, time, weather and upcoming meetings in a single view, giving users quick access to important information from the lock screen. The update focuses on making the interface more personal while keeping everyday information accessible at a glance.
Nothing is expanding its Essential AI features with updates to Essential Voice, Essential Space and Essential Apps Builder. Essential Voice offers faster and cleaner transcription, while Essential Space introduces Smart Collections to help users organise information. Essential Apps Builder is also available directly on the phone, allowing users to describe an app they want and build and deploy AI-powered applications without coding.
Nothing says further improvements to Essential Space will roll out through Google Play alongside the general release.
Nothing OS 5.0 includes performance improvements aimed at making everyday interactions smoother. These include better touch response, improved background app retention and system resource management, along with refined animations across apps, folders, widgets and multitasking. The Android 17 foundation also brings separate Notifications and Quick Settings panels, cross-platform Quick Share, enhanced privacy controls and a redesigned Recents screen. Together, these changes combine interface customisation with system-level improvements and additional tools for productivity.
Nothing OS 5.0 Rollout Details
The general rollout of Nothing OS 5.0 begins with the Nothing Phone (3). Nothing has said that more Nothing and CMF smartphones will receive the update over the coming months. Users will need to wait for the update to become available for their particular device.
Nothing OS 5.0 is a substantial update that combines a visual refresh with broader AI and performance improvements. The redesigned home screen, Micrographics clock face and updated widgets add more personalisation, while Essential Apps Builder and Smart Collections extend Nothing's push towards AI-powered features that users can access directly on their phones.
The Android 17 foundation also brings system-level changes, including separate notification and Quick Settings panels. However, the rollout schedule for most Nothing and CMF devices remains unconfirmed. The update's long-term value will depend on how consistently these features reach the wider device lineup and how useful the new AI tools prove in everyday use.
