OPPO Says Its Upcoming Find X9 Series Cameras Have Been Tuned Specifically for India

OPPO India has shared new details about LUMO Lab, its India-focused imaging initiative that is helping shape the camera experience on the upcoming OPPO Find X9 Ultra and Find X9s. The company says the project is designed to make smartphone photography feel more natural and authentic for Indian users by adapting imaging systems to local conditions, skin tones, lighting, and cultural environments.

The announcement comes just days before the launch of the OPPO Find X9 Ultra and Find X9s in India on May 21.

OPPO Is Building Cameras Around Indian Photography Conditions

According to OPPO, LUMO Lab was launched in November 2025 as an India-exclusive imaging program involving both OPPO's global camera engineers and Indian photographers, creators, and storytellers. The company says it has conducted multiple photowalks, field tests, and collaborative sessions across cities, including Delhi, Jaipur, and Mumbai.

More than 160 photographers, creators, and users reportedly participated in the testing process. The sessions focused on practical photography challenges commonly seen in India, such as capturing accurate skin tones in harsh sunlight, maintaining colour balance during festivals like Holi, and balancing people with bright architectural backgrounds in high-contrast environments.

OPPO says the learnings from these tests have directly influenced the image tuning on the Find X9 Ultra and Find X9s.

Simon Liu, Director of Imaging Technology at OPPO, said India presents unique imaging challenges because of its lighting conditions, architecture, diverse skin tones, and saturated colours. According to Liu, the company's goal is not simply to improve image quality but to make smartphone photos "feel truly Indian."

What OPPO Changed Through LUMO Lab

The first phase of LUMO Lab reportedly focused heavily on portrait photography and improving how Indian skin tones appear under different lighting conditions. OPPO says its engineers worked with photographers to fine-tune warmth, colour balance, and texture rendering to avoid unnatural or overprocessed results.

Another major area of focus was festival photography. OPPO says it refined its colour science to better capture vibrant environments without pushing images into oversaturated territory.

The latest phase focused on scenes combining people and architecture — something particularly relevant in India where landmarks, heritage sites, and urban environments often create difficult lighting and exposure situations.

Find X9 Ultra and Find X9s Positioning

The company also used the announcement to further position the Find X9 Ultra as its flagship camera-focused smartphone. OPPO says the device is designed for creators and advanced users with features like multi-focal imaging, telephoto photography, and 16-bit HDR support.

Meanwhile, the Find X9s is being positioned as a more lifestyle-focused flagship that still benefits from the same LUMO Image Engine and Hasselblad colour tuning system.

Both devices are part of OPPO's broader push into premium imaging smartphones, an area that has become increasingly competitive in India with rivals such as Vivo, Xiaomi, and Samsung also heavily investing in camera technology and creator-focused features.

With smartphone cameras now becoming a major differentiator in the premium segment, OPPO appears to be betting that localised tuning and region-specific optimisation could help its Find X9 series stand out beyond just raw megapixel counts or hardware specifications.
