Samsung 990 SSD Launched in India With Up to 7,250MB/s Read Speeds, PCIe 4.0 Interface

Samsung has expanded its consumer storage portfolio in India with the launch of the Samsung 990 SSD, a new PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive designed for gamers, content creators, DIY PC builders, and users looking to upgrade their systems with faster storage. Available in 1TB and 2TB capacities, the SSD delivers sequential read speeds of up to 7,250MB/s, improved power efficiency, and Samsung's in-house controller and V-NAND technology. The new SSD will go on sale in the last week of July, starting at Rs 25,649.

Samsung 990 SSD Specifications And Features

Built on the PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe 2.0 interface, the Samsung 990 SSD focuses on delivering a balance of high-speed performance and lower power consumption for everyday users as well as demanding workloads. The 2TB variant offers sequential read speeds of up to 7,250MB/s, while the 1TB model reaches up to 7,150MB/s. Both variants deliver sequential write speeds of up to 6,450MB/s, helping reduce game loading times, accelerate file transfers, and improve responsiveness during intensive creative workloads.

Samsung has also improved random performance with the new drive. The 2TB model delivers up to 850K random read IOPS and 1,200K random write IOPS, while the 1TB variant reaches up to 700K read IOPS and 1,100K write IOPS. According to the company, these improvements help applications launch faster while offering smoother multitasking, gaming, and handling of large datasets.

One of the biggest upgrades over its predecessor is power efficiency. Samsung claims the new 990 SSD delivers up to 38% better power efficiency than the previous 990 PRO, allowing users to achieve high performance while consuming less power. The improvement is particularly beneficial for laptops and compact desktop systems where thermal management and battery life are equally important.

The SSD is built in the standard M.2 2280 form factor and uses Samsung's proprietary V-NAND flash memory alongside an in-house controller. It also supports AES 256-bit hardware encryption, TCG/Opal V2.0, and IEEE1667 encrypted drive standards for users who require enhanced data protection. Samsung bundles its Magician Software with the drive, enabling firmware updates, drive health monitoring, performance optimisation, and seamless data migration from older storage devices.

Samsung says the larger 2TB capacity is capable of storing up to 30 AAA games based on an average game size of 64GB, making it suitable for gamers who maintain extensive libraries alongside creators working with large photo and video projects. The combination of high throughput and increased storage capacity also benefits professionals handling large media files and demanding productivity workloads.

Samsung 990 SSD Price And Availability

The Samsung 990 SSD will be available in two capacities. The 1TB variant carries an MSRP of Rs 25,649, while the 2TB model is priced at Rs 50,349. Both models are scheduled to become available in India during the last week of July 2026.

With the launch of the Samsung 990 SSD, the company is targeting users who want flagship PCIe 4.0 storage performance without moving to the still-premium PCIe 5.0 ecosystem. Faster sequential speeds, improved efficiency, Samsung's software ecosystem, and trusted in-house components make the 990 SSD a compelling upgrade for gamers, creators, and professionals building or refreshing their PCs.
