Sony FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS Launched in India With 400mm Reach, 654g Weight

Sony India has launched the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS, a new full-frame E-mount super-telephoto zoom lens aimed at wildlife photographers, sports shooters, travellers, and creators. The lens combines a 100-400mm focal range with optical image stabilisation and weighs just 654 grams, making portability one of its key highlights. It can also reach up to 800mm when paired with an optional teleconverter.

The lens measures 165.5mm in length and is designed to offer a relatively lightweight option for photographers who need long-range focal lengths. Sony says the lens can be used for wildlife and sports photography, travel, and everyday shooting, while the optional teleconverter provides additional reach for subjects that are farther away.

For optical performance, the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS uses two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements and two aspherical elements. Sony says this combination is designed to maintain resolution and contrast from the centre to the edges of the frame. The lens also features a nine-blade circular aperture for smoother-looking bokeh.

The lens is also designed for close-up photography, with a maximum magnification of 0.41x and a minimum focusing distance of 0.86 metres. This allows photographers to frame smaller subjects more tightly without requiring a separate macro lens for certain shooting situations.

Autofocus is handled by dual linear motors, which Sony says provide fast, precise, and quiet focusing. This is particularly useful when tracking moving subjects such as birds, wildlife, and athletes. The built-in Optical Image Stabilisation is designed to reduce camera shake when shooting handheld at longer focal lengths.

Sony has also included several physical controls on the lens, including a focus hold button, focus-mode/range switch, and zoom lock switch. The lens has a dust- and moisture-resistant design for outdoor shooting, making it better suited to wildlife and travel photography in challenging conditions.

The new lens also incorporates recycled materials as part of Sony's Road to Zero sustainability initiative. More than 41% of the total plastic weight used in the lens is recycled, while the lens barrel, hood, and lens caps contain over 32%, 89%, and 88% recycled plastic respectively. Sony is also using plant-based non-woven fabrics in product bags as part of its move towards recyclable packaging materials.

Sony FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS Price in India, Availability

The Sony FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS carries an MRP of Rs 94,990 in India. It is available from today, through Sony Centers, Alpha Flagship stores, authorised Sony dealers, major electronics stores, Amazon, and Flipkart.

Sony is targeting photographers who want serious telephoto reach without carrying an extremely heavy lens. The 654g weight is arguably the biggest talking point here, particularly for wildlife and travel photographers who spend hours carrying their gear.

The 100-400mm range also makes the lens versatile enough for everything from relatively close subjects to distant wildlife, while the optional teleconverter pushes the reach to 800mm. At Rs 94,990, it is still a significant investment, but the combination of portability, OSS, fast autofocus, and long-range flexibility makes the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS an interesting addition to Sony's full-frame E-mount lineup.
