Amazon Launches Alexa+ in India With Generative AI, Hindi and Hinglish Support

The upgraded assistant can handle natural conversations, control smart home devices, help with shopping and personalise recommendations.

Amazon has launched Alexa+ in India, bringing its generative AI-powered personal assistant to eligible Echo smart speakers, smart displays, Fire TV devices and the Alexa mobile app. The new experience is designed to understand natural conversations, remember context and help users complete everyday tasks, including controlling smart home devices, planning meals, shopping and discovering entertainment.

Alexa+ Generative AI Features

Alexa+ is designed to understand what users mean, rather than relying on specific commands. Users can say "Alexa" once and continue speaking naturally without repeating the wake word for every request. They can also switch topics mid-conversation or mix Hindi and English while the assistant retains context.

Amazon says Alexa+ has been adapted to Indian communication patterns, including local expressions, cultural references and everyday terms. It can understand phrases such as "dhai baje" and "ek paav", along with family relationship terms commonly used in Indian households.

Alexa+ works with compatible smart home products from brands such as Atomberg, Qubo, Dreame and Wipro. Users can control multiple devices through conversational requests, adjust settings based on their needs and create voice-controlled routines. For instance, users can ask Alexa+ to adjust the AC when a room feels too hot, start a robot vacuum or prepare the living room for movie time by changing the lights, closing the curtains and starting Fire TV.

The assistant can also suggest meals through Sanjeev Kapoor Recipes, provide step-by-step cooking guidance and help users discover music, podcasts and films through services such as Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, JioSaavn, Prime Video and Netflix. Subscription fees may apply for these services.

Amazon says integrations with EazyDiner, Swiggy, District by Zomato, MakeMyTrip, Home Triangle and TripAdvisor are coming soon, bringing restaurant reservations, food delivery, travel planning and home services to Alexa+.

Alexa+ can learn household preferences and routines to tailor recommendations for different family members. Through voice ID and visual ID, it can recognise users and factor in preferences such as dietary restrictions when suggesting recipes. It can also offer reminders based on daily routines and help users manage their schedules.

For shopping, Alexa+ can create lists based on family preferences, track Amazon.in deliveries, alert users to price drops on wishlist items and compare product features. It can also summarise verified customer reviews and suggest related products. Amazon says voice-based grocery and daily essentials ordering through Amazon Now will be added soon, allowing users to search for products, add them to their cart and place orders through conversation.

Alexa+ is built on Amazon Bedrock and uses an architecture that connects more than 70 large language models, including Amazon's own models and models from Anthropic, with hundreds of services and devices. Amazon says the system routes requests to a model suited to the task. This allows it to handle different requests, such as controlling smart home devices or planning a trip, using the capabilities most appropriate for each.

Amazon says Alexa+ includes privacy controls through the Alexa Privacy dashboard, where users can review interactions, listen to what Alexa heard, check shared attachments and manage voice recording retention preferences. Alexa-enabled devices also include microphone and camera controls, along with visual indicators to show when Alexa is listening.

Alexa+ Price in India and Availability

Alexa+ is available in India from September 16, 2026, under Early Access. Customers can use it for free on eligible Echo smart speakers and smart displays, Fire TV devices and the Alexa app. Users can check eligibility at Amazon's Alexa+ website or get access by purchasing a new eligible Echo or Fire TV device. Browser access is also planned for a later date.

After Early Access ends, Alexa+ will remain free for Prime members. Prime Lite, Prime Shopping Edition and non-Prime customers will need to access it through a qualifying Prime plan or a standalone subscription priced at Rs 2,000 per month.

Amazon has also highlighted the all-new Echo Show 8, Echo Show 11, Echo Dot Max and Echo Studio as devices designed for Alexa+, with additional processing power, memory, edge-based computing and next-generation sensors.

Alexa+ brings generative AI into a familiar voice-assistant experience, with a focus on natural language, household personalisation and completing tasks across services. Support for Hindi and Hinglish, along with the ability to understand Indian expressions and routines, is particularly relevant for households where users may not interact with technology in the same way.

The key question will be how reliably Alexa+ carries out multi-step requests and connects with services users already rely on. Its free Early Access period gives eligible customers an opportunity to try these capabilities before the standalone subscription price of Rs 2,000 per month comes into effect for customers without a qualifying Prime plan.
