Samsung Wallet Now Lets Users Make UPI Payments Using Fingerprint in India

Samsung Wallet now supports fingerprint authentication for eligible UPI payments up to Rs 10,000, letting Galaxy users pay without entering a UPI PIN.

Samsung has introduced on-device biometric authentication for UPI payments through Samsung Wallet in India, allowing Galaxy users to authorise eligible UPI transactions using their device's fingerprint sensor instead of entering a UPI PIN.

Samsung Wallet UPI Payments Features

Under the new system, users can authenticate eligible UPI payments directly with the fingerprint sensor on their Galaxy device. This removes the need to manually enter the UPI PIN for payments up to Rs 10,000.

Samsung says on-device biometric authentication can also help reduce transaction failures caused by incorrectly entered UPI PINs. Since authentication takes place using the device's fingerprint sensor, users do not need to enter their PIN in public while making eligible payments. The accompanying Samsung Wallet visual also highlights the feature with the message "Make your fingerprint your UPI PIN on Samsung Wallet", showing fingerprint-based authentication being used to approve a payment.

Samsung says the new authentication system is designed with privacy and security in mind, with sensitive information protected through Samsung Knox. Samsung Wallet uses fingerprint recognition and encryption to restrict access to secured information to the device owner.  Samsung Wallet is not limited to UPI payments. The platform also supports contactless payments using tokenised credit and debit cards, utility bill payments and the organisation of digital keys, boarding passes, tickets and ID cards.

Samsung Wallet UPI Payments Availability

Samsung says the UPI Payments are now available on the Wallet App. Samsung's fingerprint-based UPI authentication addresses a simple but common friction point in digital payments. For transactions up to Rs 10,000, Galaxy users can now authenticate with a fingerprint instead of entering their UPI PIN, making payments quicker while also reducing the need to expose the PIN while paying in public.
