Samsung Galaxy F55 Review: For Those Who Want Style

JOIN US

The mid-range segment continues to see new brand launches, and Samsung’s Galaxy F55 is the latest addition. One might wonder why brands often introduce multiple products with similar specifications at this price point, but there’s good reason. Data from several research firms shows that the Indian consumer is willing to spend Rs 25k and above on smartphones. This also explains why brands prefer multiple products to cover all bases. The Galaxy F55 appears to be the latest addition to Samsung’s ever-growing portfolio.

If one were to go simply by specifications, it mirrors the existing Galaxy M55 from Samsung, a mid-range offering from the brand. However, with the Galaxy F55, Samsung offers a more stylish form factor thanks to the vegan leather back. Still, does the phone deliver substance over style? Let’s find out in our review.

Samsung Galaxy F55 Review: Design, Display and Audio

Design Specifications
Weight 180 grams
Dimensions 163.9 x 76.5 x 7.8mm (HxWxD)
IP Rating IP67
Colour options Apricot Crush and Raisin black

The emphasis with the F55 is clearly on design, thanks to the vegan leather back. Samsung has made a rather bold choice with the Apricot Crush colour– which is a fancy term for the orange option. The leather back cover has a saddle stitch pattern on either side.

Given the overall colour, the phone looks very premium from the back. I like the orange tone that Samsung has chosen, but it might be too much for some folks. There’s also a more modest black version for those users. The vegan leather back has remained smudge-free so far despite my not-so-careful usage, and I’m not using any cover with this.

The other thing that works in the F55’s favour is the phone’s slim profile. This phone is easy to hold for everyday use, given its 7.8 mm thickness and 180 grams weight. There’s no wrist fatigue if you spend hours scrolling Facebook or Instagram on it. It is also good to see the phone features an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, which means it should be safe from most accidental spills and splashes.

Display Specifications
Size 6.67-inch
Type SAMOLED
Resolution Full HD+ (2400 x 1080)
Refresh Rate 120Hz

The phone gets a 6.67-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate. Samsung promises 1000 nits of High Brightness mode on the screen. As always, Samsung gets it right with the AMOLED screen packing accurate and punchy colours, ensuring an enjoyable viewing experience when watching content on Netflix, etc. Even under the bright sun, the display is perfectly legible, and you can read or watch content on apps like WhatsApp and Facebook easily.

However, with Netflix content, the screen is too reflective, which makes the viewing experience a bit time-consuming for some shows, especially those with darker screens. The screen supports a 120Hz refresh rate, which appears to be turned on by default thanks to the Adaptive mode. It automatically adjusts the screen refresh rate, though users can switch to the standard 60Hz rate to ensure better battery consumption.

The Galaxy F55 also comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner. I was impressed at how quickly I could set this one up. The scanner works accurately as well and quickly unlocks the phone. It has a single stereo speaker next to the USB-C port at the bottom. The audio quality left me wanting because I had to keep the volume levels at the maximum when consuming content on the phone. When watching Rick and Morty, I cranked the volume to full to listen to the dialogue.

Samsung Galaxy F55 Review: Performance, Software

Hardware Specifications
Processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1
RAM Up to 12GB
Storage Up to 256GB; expandable to 1TB
CPU Throttling Test 92 per cent of its max performance

The Galaxy F55 is powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset and comes with up to 12GB RAM options. This same chipset also powers the Galaxy M55, which makes this a confusing lineup. I have the 12GB RAM variant for review. The phone works smoothly with regular tasks, whether using social media apps or binge-watching shows on Netflix. It can easily handle less resource-intensive games like Alto’s Adventure without lags or stutters. For casual gamers, the phone is more than adequate.

Benchmarks Table Result
AnTuTu v10 534651
Geekbench 6 785 – Single-Core, 2395 – Multi-Core
Wild Life Extreme 836
Sling Shot Extreme 4462
Car Chase 33fps
Manhattan 49fps

But it struggles with heavy-duty games such as Call of Duty: Mobile. During our testing, the phone experienced major stutters and lags when playing COD: Mobile, particularly in the Very High and Max settings. The frame rates we got were not very high at the Max Settings. Plus, the front camera got very hot during COD: Mobile.

However, the phone fared slightly better with BGMI as there was lag but nothing that would majorly disrupt the gaming experience. If you’re a gamer, the Galaxy F55 will leave you wanting.

The phone runs Samsung’s OneUI 6.1 with Android 14. Samsung is promising four years of Android upgrades and five years of security updates, which is commendable. The phone does come with some bloatware and annoying widgets, which can be removed. What annoyed me, though, was that I could not figure out how to completely turn off Glance from the Lockscreen despite several attempts and workarounds. I feel Samsung can make the settings crystal clear on this front to let users turn this off.

Samsung Galaxy F55 Review: Camera

Camera Specifications
Primary Camera 50MP sensor (F/1.8) OIS Camera | Upto 10X Digital Zoom
Secondary Camera 8MP (F/2.2)
Third Camera 2 MP (F/2.4)
Selfie Camera 16MP (f/2.4, 1.0µm/2.0µm Ultra Pixel)

Samsung is packing a triple camera at the back with a 50MP primary camera. The rear camera delivers acceptable photos with enough details in well-lit scenarios. And yes, Samsung’s tendency to add that beautiful blue sky to all photos continues here, although I’m not sure every user will have a problem with this. After all, the photos look social media-ready, even if the sky is so blue that one has difficulty believing it. Samsung’s phone manages to capture details and colours accurately during the daytime.

The Galaxy F55 segregates the subject and background nicely in portrait shots, although sometimes it doesn’t get the edges, especially around hair, entirely right. But overall, I liked the portrait shots, even the ones I took at night. The ultra-wide camera is okay, but the shots lack the desired details. As always, the macro camera remains uninspiring.

It is the selfie camera that left me the most disappointed. It was often too slow to process the images, and I ended up with several blurry pictures, even when I had not moved and stayed still.

This could be a problem with my unit, or Samsung may need to push out a software update to fix this selfie camera problem. The selfies I clicked accurately look quite nice because the phone preserves the skin texture and doesn’t make me look like an AI-generated being.

Samsung Galaxy F55 Review: Battery

Battery Specifications
Battery Size 5000 mAh
Charger speed 45W
Charging in testing 0 to 48% in 30 minutes

86% in 1 hour

100% in 1 hour and 16 minutes

PC Mark Battery Test 11 hours 5 minutes

The Galaxy F55 may have a slim profile, but it doesn’t compromise battery life. With a 5000 mAh battery, it lasted an impressive 11 hours and 4 minutes in our PC Mark testing. It can easily last a full working day with moderate to heavy usage. However, it’s worth noting that the phone doesn’t have a charger, and you’ll need to purchase a 45W fast charger separately.

Samsung Galaxy F55 Review: Verdict

The Galaxy F55 offers a stylish design and durability, stable performance, and long battery life. The vegan leather adds a unique look to the phone, making it stand out in the segment. The camera performance is also acceptable, though nothing exceptional. The selfie camera, while good, has some performance issues. The software update cycle is also good enough to keep most users happy.

The problem will be the pricing. At Rs 26,999, it competes against phones like the OnePlus Nord CE 4, Realme 12 Pro+, Poco X6 Pro, and Nothing Phone 2a, which have proved to be very capable devices in the segment.

Plus, the F55’s higher storage variants will compete against some new launches, such as Realme GT 6T and Poco F6, which have higher starting prices but better performance offers. What doesn’t help further is that the Samsung M55 has the same specifications.

The Galaxy F55 is a good choice for those who want a stylish phone with a good enough camera and battery and don’t care about hard-core gaming.
