Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, bringing some of the biggest upgrades to its Pro lineup in recent years. The new models introduce a variable-aperture 48MP Fusion Main camera, the new A20 Pro chipset, an upgraded thermal system and longer battery life.
iPhone 18 Pro And Pro Max Specifications
The biggest camera upgrade is the new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, marking the first time Apple has brought adjustable aperture control to an iPhone. The camera uses six laser-cut blades that can move between four aperture settings. The system can automatically adjust the aperture depending on lighting and depth-of-field requirements, while users can also manually control it through the new Pro controls in the Camera app.
Apple says the new sensor and computational photography pipeline improve low-light photography and detail, particularly in group shots. Developers will also be able to access aperture controls through an API. The Camera app now offers additional manual controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance and exposure through a histogram, giving users more control over the shooting process.
Apple is also introducing Apple Reference Image, a new system designed to help verify the authenticity of photos captured on the iPhone 18 Pro models. The Main camera can sign the sensor data captured by every pixel. When Reference mode is enabled, this data is processed through Private Cloud Compute to create an unalterable reference image that can be viewed alongside the regular photo in the Photos app.
Apple says the feature is aimed at photographers, photojournalists and other users who need to establish whether an image has been modified. Support for SynthID is also planned in a software update later this year. The iPhone 18 Pro series is powered by the new A20 Pro, which Apple says is built using a 2nm process. The chip features a six-core CPU with integrated Neural Accelerators and offers 50% more memory bandwidth than A19 Pro. Its seven-core GPU is claimed to be up to 40% faster than the previous generation.
Apple has also upgraded the Neural Engine with a new dual 16-core design, giving A20 Pro 32 Neural Engine cores in total for AI and computational photography workloads. Both models also feature Apple's N1 wireless networking chip, bringing Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread support. The iPhone 18 Pro lineup also introduces the C2 cellular modem system, which Apple says improves upload speeds while consuming 15% less energy than C1X.
Apple has redesigned the thermal architecture of the iPhone 18 Pro series with a next-generation vapor chamber. The A20 Pro's packaging places the memory alongside the silicon rather than directly in its thermal path, allowing the chip to connect directly to the vapor chamber. Apple says the new vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the previous generation.
According to Apple, this enables up to a 40% improvement in sustained performance compared with the previous generation, making the upgrade particularly relevant for gaming and other prolonged workloads.
Battery life is another major focus this year. Apple claims the iPhone 18 Pro Max delivers the largest increase in battery life ever seen on an iPhone. The eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro offers up to 36 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches up to 45 hours. The iPhone 18 Pro can reach 50% charge in around 15 minutes using wired charging, while wireless charging can reach 50% in approximately 30 minutes. Apple also claims that five minutes of wired charging on the iPhone 18 Pro Max can provide around seven hours of video playback.
The Dynamic Island has also been redesigned. Apple says the new version takes up less space while providing more information. It can now display up to three Live Activities simultaneously, while continuing to support Face ID for authentication and secure unlocking.
The iPhone 18 Pro models ship with iOS 27 and Apple's next generation of Apple Intelligence. The biggest software addition is Siri AI, which will roll out as a beta with iOS 27. The new Siri can use personal context from messages, emails, photos and other information to provide more relevant responses. It also supports onscreen awareness, allowing Siri to understand what's displayed on the screen and take relevant actions. A dedicated Siri mode in the Camera app can also provide information about objects and scenes in front of the user.
Apple says Apple Intelligence continues to use on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute for privacy.
iPhone 18 Pro Price and Availability
The iPhone 18 Pro is listed at ₹1,64,900, with EMI starting from ₹26,316 per month, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max is priced at ₹1,79,900, with EMI starting from ₹28,817 per month.
Pre-orders begin on September 12, with sales starting September 18. India is among the countries included in the first wave of availability. The new iPhone 18 Pro models will be available in black, silver, glacier and burgundy.
The iPhone 18 Pro series looks like a substantial upgrade rather than a simple annual refresh. The variable-aperture camera is the biggest change, giving the Pro lineup a new level of manual photography control, while A20 Pro and the redesigned vapor chamber focus on sustained performance. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is particularly interesting for users who prioritise battery life, with Apple claiming up to 45 hours of video playback. The new Siri AI and Apple Reference Image features also show Apple pushing further into on-device intelligence and image authenticity.
