MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro Debuts in India

MediaTek has introduced the Dimensity 9600 Pro in India, bringing a new 2nm flagship smartphone chipset with upgrades across CPU performance, on-device AI, gaming and imaging. The OPPO Find X10 Pro Max will be the first smartphone in India to use it, giving buyers an early indication of where the new platform will appear.

Unveiled at MediaTek Tech Day in New Delhi, the chip places particular emphasis on power efficiency and AI that can work across apps. For buyers, the more meaningful promise is how well upcoming flagships can sustain demanding tasks, from gaming to video recording, while keeping power consumption in check.

Dimensity 9600 Pro Phones: Launch Timeline and Availability

The first smartphones powered by the Dimensity 9600 Pro and the accompanying Dimensity 9600M are expected to launch between October and December 2026. MediaTek has confirmed the OPPO Find X10 Pro Max's India debut with the Pro chipset, although an exact launch date and phone pricing were not shared in the announcement.

That makes this a preview of the next wave of flagship phones. Buyers will need the individual handset announcements to assess pricing, camera hardware and which chipset features make it into retail devices.

A 2nm Design With Greater Emphasis on Efficiency

The Dimensity 9600 Pro uses an eight-core, 2+3+3 CPU configuration. It combines two C2-Ultra cores running at up to 4.55GHz, three C2-Pro cores at 4.35GHz and another three C2-Pro cores at 3.1GHz.

MediaTek claims up to 17% higher single-core performance and 15% higher multi-core performance over the previous generation. Its press release also claims a 61% reduction in multi-core power consumption, although it does not detail the test conditions. This should not be read as an equivalent improvement in a phone's battery life.

The efficiency claim is particularly relevant to extended workloads. Faster peak performance helps, but maintaining performance during a long gaming session or video export is where the combination of chip efficiency and a phone's cooling system becomes important.

On-Device AI Moves Beyond Responding to Prompts

MediaTek's Native AI architecture pairs two neural processing units with its Dimensity Agentic AI Engine. The company says this will enable AI that understands context, anticipates needs and coordinates tasks across apps.

The second-generation Super-Efficient NPU is claimed to reduce always-on AI power consumption by 40%. The higher-performance NPU 1090 offers a claimed 51% improvement in large language model prefill performance and 55% higher token generation per watt, alongside support for models with up to 30 billion parameters.

In practical terms, prefill performance concerns processing a prompt and its context before generating a response, while tokens per watt measures generation efficiency. These improvements could help make local AI more responsive and less demanding on the battery. The actual features, supported apps and model sizes will still depend on each phone maker's software and memory configuration.

Gaming Upgrades Target Graphics and Sustained Performance

The G2-Ultra NX GPU brings claimed gains of up to 27% in peak performance and 18% in ray tracing, alongside lower power consumption. MediaTek also lists gaming support at up to 185fps, with its Neural Graphics Architecture combining GPU and AI computing.

These capabilities give manufacturers more scope to support demanding graphics and high frame rates. They do not mean every game will run at 185fps: title support, graphics settings, display capabilities and thermal limits will determine the experience.

For gamers comparing upcoming phones, sustained frame rates and heat management will be more useful measures than the maximum supported frame rate alone.

Camera Support Includes 4K240 Slow Motion

The Dimensity 9600 Pro features the Imagiq 1290 image signal processor and MediaTek's AI Imaging Fusion Architecture. Listed capabilities include NPU-powered 60fps motion capture, 4K video at 240fps for slow motion, 4K60 AI True Color Tone and 4K120 cinematic log recording.

This gives phone makers a wider range of tools for action capture and video creation. High-frame-rate recording can offer more flexibility for slow-motion footage, while log recording is useful for creators who colour-grade their videos.

Camera results will also depend on the sensors, lenses and processing choices in each handset. The chipset enables these modes; manufacturers decide which ones to offer.

What to Watch for in the First Dimensity 9600 Phones

MediaTek also announced the Dimensity 9600M, extending its new flagship family beyond the Pro model. It includes the company's Agentic AI Engine, Dimensity Scheduling Engine and HyperEngine gaming features, but the announcement does not provide enough detail to establish the performance gap between the two chips.

Together, the launches show MediaTek putting AI, imaging and efficiency at the centre of its flagship pitch. The OPPO Find X10 Pro Max will provide the first opportunity in India to see how the Pro platform translates into a finished phone.

For buyers considering an upgrade, the questions are concrete: does the phone maintain performance under load, do its AI features save time, and does its camera deliver consistently? Those answers, alongside pricing and battery life, will determine how compelling the Dimensity 9600 Pro's improvements are.
