As usual, we asked thousands of laptop users in India about their current laptop ownership, their satisfaction experience, purchase preferences, and more in the laptop segment. Let’s dive into the laptop market in India in the MSP Laptop Satisfaction Study 2024, based on responses of over 8,000 users.

Laptop Ownership Trends in India

Last year, the Indian government planned to boost the make-in-India laptop program. HP and Dell were among the first brands to start manufacturing laptops in the country. Therefore, it came as no surprise that these were the top 2 most popular brands among users too.

  • As mentioned above, HP and Dell are India’s most popular laptop brands with 26.1% and 20.2% market share, respectively.
  • Lenovo and ASUS are the third and fourth most popular laptop brands with 14.1 and 10.7% market share.
  • Acer completes the list of top 5 laptop brands in India with 8.5% market share.
  • Other brands at the top include Apple, Samsung, Realme, Xiaomi, and Infinix.

Dell And ASUS Are the Most Popular Laptop Brands Under Rs 50,000

Let’s look at the segment-wise breakup of the most popular laptop brands in different price segments in India.

  • HP was the most popular laptop brand of laptops owned by the respondents of MSP Laptop Satisfaction Study 2024 with 26.1% of users owning an HP laptop.
  • Dell and Lenovo are the second and third most-owned laptop brands with 20.2% and 16.4% users.
  • These brands were closely followed by Acer, ASUS, Apple, and Samsung.

Dell continues to be the best brand above Rs 50,000

When it comes to premium laptops, Dell continues to be the favourite. However, HP slipped a rung below with ASUS claiming the second spot.

  • In the premium segment, Dell and ASUS are neck to neck with 18.7% and 18.1% of users owning these brands.
  • HP is at the third spot with 17.8% of respondents saying they own the brand’s laptop.
  • Apple makes it to the top 5 list for the first time with 15.1% of users closely followed by Lenovo and Acer.

The latest MSP Laptop Satisfaction Study 2024 also revealed that over 50% of respondents have purchased their laptops recently in the last couple of years. And, the Rs 30,000 – Rs 50,000 price bracket is the most popular segment with 35% of respondents owning laptops in this segment.

Laptop User Satisfaction Trends in India

Regarding user satisfaction, we asked the respondents whether they were satisfied with their laptops. Below is the list of best brands in various parameters according to the users.

HP is the top brand in India when it comes to user satisfaction.

  • HP is the number one brand in India when it comes to user satisfaction with a whopping 81.7% of respondents saying they are satisfied with the brand’s laptops.
  • Apple is a close second in this list with a 78.4% share and Acer is third with a 76.3% share.
  • Samsung and LG complete the top 5 list in this category with 74.4% and 74% of users saying they are satisfied.
  • Around 34% of respondents said that they have not faced any issues with the laptop they own.
  • The most common problems faced by laptop users in India include hardware failure, software issues, and battery problems.
  • Apple enjoys unparalleled popularity in terms of build quality, whereas Lenovo is the best brand in terms of performance.

Laptop Buying Trends in India

1 in 4 laptop users in India want to upgrade to an Apple laptop

To find out the laptop buying trends in India, we asked users which laptop brand they would most likely upgrade to.

  • Apple is the most popular choice as the next upgrade for the majority of users with 1 in 4 respondents saying they want to upgrade to a MacBook.
  • ASUS is the next most popular choice for an upgrade with 16.8% of users aspiring to buy its laptops.
  • The other three most popular upgrade choices are the usual suspects, HP, Dell, and Lenovo.

As you can see in the table above, Apple is the next logical step for most laptop users of Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, and Samsung with over 20% of users saying they will upgrade to a MacBook next. Only Acer users are an exception to the rule with ASUS being their first choice and Apple being the second.

Most Popular Laptop Features in India

More than 50% of users consider performance to be the key factor when buying a laptop

  • Performance and graphics are the most important factors when buying a new laptop according to around 70% of respondents.
  • Battery and display are next on the list of criteria when deciding the next laptop purchase.
  • Other important criteria are storage, portability, and connectivity.
  • Among the new age features, AI, high-resolution touchscreen display, modern form factors including dual display or convertible, and fast charging are at the top of the list.
  • More than 90% of respondents said that they are willing to pay a premium for AI features.
  • In terms of processors, Intel dominates the market with a 50% share and Apple is in the second spot with a 24.7% share of its M-series processors. AMD is the third in the list with a 13.6% share.

The study also revealed that around 6 in 10 people are likely to upgrade to a laptop above Rs 50,000. More than 50% of users of a budget, below Rs 50,000, and above Rs 50,000 laptop users are likely to upgrade to a pricier model.

Post-pandemic, laptops have become more than a lifestyle product; they have evolved into a necessity and work tool for many. This is evident from the fact that most respondents purchased their laptops in the last couple of years. Moreover, it also reflects in the revelation that more people are looking at the performance and battery of a laptop before buying one.

HP, Dell, and Lenovo are the go-to brands for many but almost everyone wants to upgrade to an Apple MacBook down the line. Overall, HP is the most preferred brand with high customer satisfaction ranking.
