2018 has been a rather busy year for Nokia. The company launched a bunch of new smartphones this year and looks like they are in no mood to stop. One of the handsets that the company recently launched in China was the Nokia X7. Days after the launch of the Nokia X7, there were reports about the possibility of the company rechristening the X7 as the Nokia 7.1 Plus to launch it in other markets. Adding to the confusion, we now have another handset called the Nokia 8.1 that has been making headlines. There have been several reports indicating that the Nokia X7 would launch not as the Nokia 7.1 Plus, but as the Nokia 8.1.
Anyway, Let us check out what the Nokia 8.1 is all about.
Nokia 8.1 Price in India
Speculating on the price of a yet to be launched smartphone is always tricky. However, since there is a good chance that this phone is nothing but a rechristened Nokia X7, we can expect this to be priced similarly to the Nokia X7 that is currently on sale in China. In China, the Nokia X7 is offered in three versions with the price of the base version pegged at 1699 yuan (INR 18,000). Then next version costs 1999 Yuan (INR 21,000) followed by a top-of-the-line variant priced at 2499 yuan (INR 27,000). If the Nokia X7 ever makes it to India as the Nokia 8.1, we can expect the company to follow more or less the same pricing pattern.
Nokia 8.1 With Model Number TA-1119 Gets NCC Certification in Taiwan
After releasing new Nokia 7.1 Plus in October HMD Global-backed Nokia is now looking to launch more new handsets. A new Nokia smartphone with model number TA-1119 has just received certification at the National Communications Commission (NCC) of Taiwan today. NCC is a Taiwanese agency, similar to TENNA in China that certify all the electronic devices that are set to launch in the country.
We reported the same handset’s spotting on the EEC portal back in July along with a Nokia TA-1087 in Russia. However, even that listing couldn’t provide us any sneak peek into the spec-sheet of any of the two devices. The appearance of the Nokia TA-1119 on the NCC means that it could be closing on a debut in the country.
Nokia 8.1 Rumored Specifications:
Now, this model (Nokia TA-1119) is likely the Nokia X7 that debuted in China in October. However, internationally it will be referred to as the Nokia 8.1. It is a mid-range handset powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 and bearing a notch design similar to the iPhone X. It comes with a traditional rear fingerprint reader.
As for optics, the handset carries dual ZEISS-certified 12MP + 13MP shooters on the back along with a 20MP selfie sensor. A 3500mAh battery powers Android Oreo on a 6.18-inch display which is of Full-HD+ resolution.
The device will come ready with connectivity features like Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, A-GPS, GLONASS. Now that the model has appeared in Taiwan, we can hopefully expect to see its global debut soon as well.
Nokia 8.1: Specifications, features
From what is currently known, and based on the initial assumption that the Nokia 8.1, Nokia 7.1 Plus and the Nokia X7 are the same devices, we know that this device will be powered by the newest mid-range SoC from Qualcomm – the Snapdragon 710. This SoC houses an octa-core processor that has been clocked at 2.2 GHz. The SoC also houses the Adreno 616 GPU for graphics. This is notably the most powerful mid-range SoC from the house of Qualcomm.
As was with the case with the Nokia X7 in China, we can expect the Nokia 8.1 to be launched in three versions here in India. The entry-level version will get 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, followed by the 6GB RAM version also with 64GB of storage. The most expensive of the lot would be the 6GB RAM version with 128GB of storage. As for the battery, since the Nokia 8.1 is likely to get a 3500mAh battery with support for fast charging over USB Type-C. And yes, the phone will get a 3.5mm jack for audio.
As for the display, the Nokia 8.1 is likely to get a 6.18-inch panel in the 18.7:9 aspect ratio with FHD+ resolution. The display of the Nokia X7 currently sold in China is HDR ready. It would be interesting to see if the same feature is offered on the Nokia 8.1 when it launches elsewhere.
Moving on to the cameras, the Nokia 8.1 is likely to feature a dual camera setup at the rear. This setup includes a 12-megapixel primary shooter mated to a 13-megapixel secondary camera. The primary camera uses Sony’s IMX 363 sensor. As for the front camera, this one is likely to be a 20-megapixel shooter with f/2.0 aperture.
Moving on to the all-important software aspects of the device, it is almost confirmed that the Nokia 8.1 will launch with Android 9 Pie preinstalled. Being a Nokia, we can also expect the handset to run a near-stock version of Android.
