Haier HWD120-DM14F11BKU1 Review: A Premium Washer-Dryer With the Best Control Panel I’ve Seen Yet

A premium washing machine has to do more than clean clothes well. At this price, it needs to make laundry less tedious, reduce guesswork, work for different members of the family and justify the space it occupies in a home. Haier’s HWD120-DM14F11BKU1 gets surprisingly close to that brief.

What Is Bad?

  • Some useful modes need to be downloaded through the app
  • Drying is useful, but needs realistic load management

I have been writing about gadgets for close to two decades now, and washing machines have been part of my review cycle for around four years. Over that period, most front-loaders have followed a familiar template: a dial, a small display, a few touch buttons and an app that hides the rest. Haier takes a very different route with this 12kg washer-dryer. The AI Colorful Touch Panel is not a side feature here. It is the centre of the experience.

The result is a machine that feels modern without becoming intimidating. Younger users can use the app, download cloud programmes and track cycles in detail. Older users can rely almost entirely on the large, bright, colourful panel. After using the machine across regular loads, Quick Wash, Bedding, AI Wash, steam-assisted cycles and an early drying test, the balance between premium design and everyday usability is what stands out the most.

Haier officially lists the HWD120-DM14F11BKU1 as a 12kg front-load washer-dryer with a 7kg drying capacity, 1400 RPM spin speed, 5-star energy rating, Direct Motion Motor, Smart Dosing, Ultra Fresh Air Technology and AI Colorful Touch Panel. While the MRP is higher but most online retailers have listed it close to Rs 64,000. And then there are card offers and schemes that one can make use of to get another 5% off.

Design and Build: Premium, Polished and Surprisingly Practical

The Haier HWD120-DM14F11BKU1 looks properly premium. The black finish, wide control section and large circular door give it the presence expected from a 12kg front-loader. It is a big machine, but it does not look bulky in an awkward way. The front has a clean, glass-like appearance, and the finish does not pick up fingerprints as easily as one might expect from a dark appliance.

Build quality also leaves a good first impression. The door handle feels sturdy, the door opens and closes with confidence, and the detergent compartment feels better built than the one on the LG front-loader I reviewed earlier. That may sound like a small thing, but on a washing machine, these are the parts you interact with every day. A flimsy detergent tray or weak door handle can quickly make a premium machine feel less premium.

The machine also remained stable during use. Even during high-speed spin cycles, I did not notice any meaningful movement or shaking. In Spin Only mode, the RPM can go up to 1400, and even then the machine felt composed. Large-capacity front-loaders can become noisy or unstable if the load is not balanced well, so Haier’s stability is reassuring.

The gasket area also behaved well during the review period. Water did not collect after cycles, and there was no noticeable smell after use. Front-load washing machines can develop damp odours over time if moisture stays trapped around the drum or gasket, so early moisture management matters.

The Control Panel Is the Real Showstopper

The AI Colorful Touch Panel is easily the most distinctive part of this washing machine. I have reviewed washing machines for around four years now, and I have not seen a control panel quite like this on a front-loader.

Most premium washing machines follow a familiar layout. You get a dial for common modes, a small display, and a few touch buttons for extra settings. The rest of the features are either hidden in submenus or pushed into the app. Haier has taken a more visual route. The main modes are placed directly on the panel as bright, colourful tiles. Drum Clean, Spin, Rinse + Spin, Dry Only, Bedding, Cotton, Delicate, Jeans, Eco, Quick and Smart Wash are all visible upfront.

The selected mode also blinks on the panel, which makes it very clear what has been chosen. In our unit, for instance, the Bedding mode started blinking once selected. The visual feedback makes the interface feel less intimidating, especially for users who do not want to scroll through a complicated menu or rely on a phone app.

The panel is modern, but not confusing. The layout is bright, bold, and eye-catching, but still easy to understand. Older users can rely on the machine itself, while younger users can move to the app for more advanced features. I liked the panel so much that I often preferred using it over the app.

Compared to the LG 12KG front-loader I reviewed earlier, the Haier feels more complete from the machine itself. On the LG, some less frequently used modes were accessible through the app. On the Haier, a lot more is visible directly on the panel. In a family setup where not everyone wants to use an app to start a wash, that makes a difference.

Installation and Setup: Smooth From the Start

The installation experience was straightforward. The technician arrived promptly, completed the setup on time and helped connect the machine to the app. He also explained the basic washer and dryer functions, which is important for a machine like this because it has more going on than a standard front-loader.

Our home does not have a water pressure problem, so the machine did not need any extra adjustments before use. Wi-Fi pairing was also smooth. It did not feel like one of those smart appliance setups where you spend more time resetting the device than actually using it.

The app itself is polished. It shows detailed cycle information, and it does not stop at just showing how many minutes are left. It also tells you by when the load will be done. For example, instead of only showing a countdown, it can show that the wash will finish by 4:30 pm. That is more useful in daily life because you can plan around the finish time.

Small visual touches also help. When a wash cycle is running, the app shows water-wave animations on the screen. These animations do not change the wash quality, of course, but they make the app feel more thoughtfully designed than usual.

Remote start works the way it usually does on connected washing machines. You first need to enable it on the machine, and then you can control it through the app. Cycle monitoring was accurate during my usage, and notifications were mostly limited to useful alerts such as cycle completion. I did not encounter any error alerts during the review period.

App Experience and Smart Features: Useful Without Being Forced

The app adds real value, especially if you like exploring modes beyond the basics. Some programmes are available through the cloud and need to be downloaded before they can be used. Hygiene Wash, for example, is one such mode.

Cloud programmes make the machine more flexible, but they also introduce a small discovery problem. Users who never explore the app may not realise that some extra modes exist. Haier could have made these additions easier to surface during setup.

Even so, the balance between app and panel is handled well. The machine is not useless without the app. Most major modes are available directly on the colourful panel. The app is there for deeper control, cloud programmes, remote operation and detailed cycle tracking.

Smart Dosing is another practical feature. The machine can decide detergent and softener quantity on its own based on the load, but the app also lets users take control manually. Detergent can be set at different levels, including 40, 70, 100, 150 and even 200 percent. Softener can also be adjusted, with 100 percent being the default level for regular use.

I used liquid detergent and softener during the review, and the dosing system worked well for regular loads. Clothes came out clean, soft and without detergent residue. For homes that already use liquid detergent and softener, Smart Dosing reduces the everyday guesswork without taking away control.

Wash Performance: Strong Across Everyday Loads

The Haier HWD120-DM14F11BKU1 performed well across regular laundry loads. AI mode is the one I found most useful for everyday mixed loads because the machine detects the load and adjusts the cycle accordingly. For homes where laundry is usually a mix of T-shirts, shirts, lowers, innerwear, and towels, this mode is likely to become the default.

Most regular cycles took between 39 minutes and 1 hour 40 minutes, depending on the programme, fabric type and load weight. The machine also adjusts cycle behaviour based on the load, so the displayed time can vary. That is expected from a modern front-loader and is better than forcing every load through the same fixed cycle.

Wash quality was consistently good in regular modes. Daily wear came out clean, smell removal was effective, and there was no detergent residue left behind. Fabric feel was also soft, helped by the use of liquid detergent and softener. The machine handled mixed water conditions without any issue during my usage.

Bedding mode was useful as well. Since this is not blanket season, I tested the drum with two comforters. Even then, the machine was not packed. There was enough room to add four to five daily-wear clothes while keeping the load around the 50 to 60 percent mark, which is ideal for effective cleaning in a front-loader.

The 12kg capacity feels genuinely useful, not just impressive on paper. For larger families, it can reduce the number of weekly cycles. For smaller homes, it gives you the flexibility to wash bulky items such as comforters, bedsheets, and towels without waiting for laundry day or sending everything out.

There is also an option to add steam wash to most cycles. However, that will require the app intervention and you will have to go in customising a cycle, and it does improve the wash experience for loads where hygiene is a priority. It also increases the overall cycle time, which is expected.

One behaviour surprised me. Steam is not automatically enabled even in Hygiene mode. The app shows the temperature going up to 90 degrees, but steam still needs to be toggled separately. I expected steam to be turned on by default in a hygiene-focused cycle, so users should pay attention to this.

Once enabled, steam-assisted washing worked well. Clothes felt clean, and the mode makes sense for towels, innerwear, bedding and loads where odour or hygiene is a concern. For families with kids, elderly members or anyone who prefers high-temperature washing for certain loads, steam support adds value.

Quick Wash: Fast, Useful and Family-Approved

Quick mode deserves a separate mention because this is the mode my mother likes the most. It finishes laundry in around 15 minutes, which is exactly the kind of cycle many Indian homes end up using for lightly soiled daily clothes.

Wash quality in Quick mode is comparable to the LG front-loader I reviewed earlier, though slightly behind it. Having said that, for everyday laundry that is not heavily stained, it is good enough. It is especially useful for clothes that need a quick refresh rather than a deep clean.

A 15-minute wash will not replace a longer Cotton, Hygiene or steam-assisted cycle for dirty clothes. But for daily wear, office clothes, lightly used garments and urgent loads, Haier’s Quick mode does the job well.

Customisation: Plenty of Control Without Becoming Complicated

The Haier offers good cycle customisation. You can adjust wash time, rinse settings and spin RPM depending on the programme. Bedding mode, for instance, is capped at 1000 RPM, while Spin Only can go up to 1400 RPM.

The cap makes sense for heavier or bulkier fabrics, though some defaults could have been more conservative. Innerwear still defaults to 1000 RPM, which felt a little high. A lower default spin speed for more delicate loads would have been better.

Rinse + Spin is useful as well. It rinses multiple times and then spins the load, which helps when you want to remove extra detergent or refresh clothes without running a full wash. Spin performance was strong, and even at higher RPMs, the machine did not show noticeable shake.

Drying Performance: Handy, As Long As You Use It Sensibly

The Haier HWD120-DM14F11BKU1 is a washer-dryer, and drying is one of its biggest selling points. Drying is available as a customisation in most modes and is off by default. You can switch it to Automatic or choose timed drying options such as 30, 60, 90, 120 or 150 minutes.

I was cautious with drying at first and tested it with a towel. I selected a setting that was not the most aggressive, and the towel came out almost dry. More importantly, it did not come out with heavy, unpleasant wrinkling. Washer-dryers can sometimes leave clothes hot, crushed or overly wrinkled if the drying cycle is too aggressive, so this was a good early sign.

Daily wear also came out well, especially when it came to smell removal. The drying feature is particularly useful for monsoon days, late-night laundry, towels, innerwear and urgent loads. It may not fully replace line drying for every family, especially if you prefer sun-dried clothes, but it adds genuine convenience.

A washer-dryer should be used with realistic expectations. The machine has a 12kg washing capacity, but the drying capacity is 7kg. It is not meant for users to throw in a completely full 12kg wash load and expect everything to come out perfectly cupboard-dry in a short time. Smaller loads, towels, daily wear and weather-related emergencies are where the drying function makes the most sense.

Ultra Fresh Air: A Relevant Feature for Indian Homes

Ultra Fresh Air is one of the headline features of this machine, and it feels relevant for Indian homes. Front-load washing machines can develop a damp smell if the drum and gasket area stay moist after repeated use. The problem becomes worse during monsoon or in homes where the machine is placed in a bathroom or utility area with limited ventilation.

Haier’s system is designed to circulate air inside the drum and around moisture-prone areas to reduce dampness and odour. During my usage, the gasket did not collect water, and the drum did not develop any noticeable smell after cycles.

Odour control is something that matters more over months of use, so I would not overstate the long-term impact yet. Still, as an early experience, the Haier does seem to be handling moisture well. For a washer-dryer, that matters even more because drying cycles and closed-door usage can make freshness management more important.

Noise and Vibration: Stable Even at Higher Spin Speeds

The Haier remained stable during regular washing, rinsing and spinning. I did not notice excessive shaking, even when using Spin Only at up to 1400 RPM. The machine also handled bedding and comforter loads without feeling unbalanced.

Noise levels were acceptable in regular use. Without measured decibel readings, I would not call it the quietest washing machine in the segment, but it is refined enough for home use. The lack of vibration was more impressive than the absolute noise level.

The Direct Motion Motor likely helps with this sense of control. The machine does not feel nervous or unstable when the load gets heavier. For homes where the washing machine is placed near a bedroom, kitchen or living area, the stability will be appreciated.

Everyday Use: Where the Haier Starts Making Sense

The Haier HWD120-DM14F11BKU1 works because it does not force one type of user behaviour. Some smart appliances become annoying because everything useful is inside the app. Some traditional machines feel outdated because the panel does not show enough information. Haier avoids both extremes.

Indian homes rarely have appliances used by just one person. A washing machine may be operated by parents, house help, younger family members and sometimes guests. Haier’s panel makes it easier for everyone to understand what is happening.

The 12kg capacity also adds real convenience. It makes sense for larger families, but it also helps smaller homes with bedding, comforters, towels and weekly laundry piles. The machine is not just big for the sake of it. The drum size genuinely changes how much you can get done in one cycle.

Verdict

The Haier HWD120-DM14F11BKU1 is one of the most interesting front-load washer-dryers I have used recently. It gets the basics right, but what makes it memorable is the way it combines a large 12kg drum, useful drying, Smart Dosing, a polished app and an excellent control panel.

The AI Colorful Touch Panel is the biggest highlight. It is bright, bold, easy to understand and genuinely more convenient than the usual dial-plus-display setup. It also makes the machine less dependent on the app, which is a big advantage in a family home.

Wash performance is strong across regular loads, AI mode is useful for mixed laundry, Quick mode is genuinely practical for daily wear, and steam-assisted washing adds value for hygiene-focused loads. Drying works well when used with realistic expectations, especially for smaller loads and monsoon use.

The score of 8.5/10 feels right because the Haier delivers a very strong everyday experience. It loses some ground because drying still needs sensible load management, some modes are hidden in the app, and steam should have been more automatically integrated into Hygiene mode. However, as a premium washer-dryer for Indian homes, it makes a strong case for itself.
