Whirlpool Launches AI-Powered Refrigerator Technology to Detect Over-Ripening, Prices Start at Rs 98,000

Whirlpool has launched AI-powered freshness detection technology in its Luxuriem four-door refrigerators in India, using ethylene sensors to detect early signs of over-ripening, with prices starting at Rs 98,000.

Whirlpool of India has introduced a freshness detection technology in its Luxuriem four-door refrigerators, using the company's proprietary 6th Sense AI to identify early signs of over-ripening in fruits and vegetables. The technology is designed to alert users when stored produce may need attention, potentially helping households reduce food wastage.

Whirlpool claims the technology is India's first freshness detection system of its kind in refrigerators. The feature uses an in-built sensor to monitor ethylene levels inside the crisper drawer and scans stored produce every 10 seconds.

Whirlpool Luxuriem Refrigerator Specifications and Features

At the centre of the system is Whirlpool's iFresh Sensor Engine, which uses an iFresh Sensor built directly into the refrigerator's crisper drawer. The sensor tracks ethylene, a naturally occurring gas released by fruits and vegetables as they ripen.

The refrigerator uses 6th Sense AI to monitor changes in ethylene levels. When the system detects an increase associated with over-ripening, it sends an alert so users can check the stored produce and decide whether it needs to be consumed soon.

Unlike conventional refrigeration systems that primarily focus on keeping food cool, the new technology is designed to give users greater visibility into the condition of their stored fruits and vegetables, including items that may not yet show visible signs of ripening.

Whirlpool says it worked with food scientists to understand how different types of Indian produce release ethylene across varying conditions and seasons. Its Full-Spectrum Produce Detection technology is designed to account for differences in ripening patterns. The company cites high-ethylene emitters such as apples, pears, kiwis, avocados and peaches, alongside lower-ethylene emitters such as lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower.

A Real-Time UI Tracking interface also allows users to view the freshness status of their produce. When an alert appears, users can inspect the food and reset the notification. The system records this feedback and uses it to adjust future alert thresholds to better reflect individual household preferences.

Whirlpool says the technology uses on-device AI, with adaptive learning intended to improve how the system responds to changes in produce freshness over time. The freshness detection system expands Whirlpool's premium Luxuriem four-door refrigerator portfolio. The range will be offered in 645-litre, 651-litre and 654-litre capacities, with multiple premium finishes. The new technology is designed around a common household problem: fruits and vegetables purchased in bulk can remain in the refrigerator for days without being checked, increasing the chances of over-ripening and food waste. By providing alerts and a visible freshness status, Whirlpool aims to make food management more proactive.

Whirlpool Luxuriem Refrigerator Price in India and Availability

The expanded Whirlpool Luxuriem four-door refrigerator range starts at Rs 98,000 in India. The refrigerators will be available through leading retail stores and online platforms nationwide.

Whirlpool's freshness detection technology brings AI to a practical household problem rather than limiting it to conventional smart-home controls. Monitoring ethylene levels and alerting users to potential over-ripening could help households manage stored produce more effectively, particularly when buying groceries in bulk.

However, the system's real-world usefulness will depend on how reliably it identifies changes across different foods and how actionable its alerts prove to be. With prices starting at Rs 98,000, the technology is initially positioned within the premium refrigerator segment.
