People born in the 80s and 90s cannot forget Yash Chopra whose films have taught them what romance is. Songs of his films still give Goosebumps to those born in those years. He not only brought out the romantic side of the ‘Angry Young Man’ of that era but also gave India its own “King of Romance.” His films and Studio Yash Raj Films (YRF) have been the hallmark of change in Bollywood. From single screens to multiplexes, to camera angles to VFX, Yash Raj Films have seen it all and triumphed it all. Now, the streaming giant Netflix has informed through a tweet that it has decided to celebrate the cultural legacy of this iconic Indian filmmaker Yash Chopra and his studio YRF with the documentary series “The Romantics.”

The star-studded documentary will examine Bollywood’s history through the lens of YRF’s influence in popularising Bollywood and its leading stars on a global scale. It will include 35 of the biggest names in the Hindi film industry, including the megastars who have closely collaborated with YRF throughout its existence. In remembrance of the late Chopra, who is recognised as the father of romance in Indian cinema due to his love flicks, including “Silsila,” “Lamhe,” “Kabhi Kabhie,” “Veer-Zaara,” “Dil To Pagal Hai,” “Chandni” and “Jab Tak Hai Jaan.” the streaming platform will make the series available worldwide on February 14 (Valentine’s Day).

Smriti Mundhra, who previously helmed Indian Matchmaking and the Never Have I Ever series for Netflix, is the director of The Romantics. The Romantics, a documentary series from the Oscar- and Emmy-nominated director, will kick off Netflix’s unscripted slate in India in 2023. In a press release, Monika Shergill, VP, content, Netflix India, said: “Fondly remembered as the king of romance, Yash Chopra’s films brought in a new wave of emotion, individualism and cultural change to Hindi cinema and helped turn one of the biggest film industries in the world into what it is today. In celebration of the iconic songs, stories, and nostalgia, we’re partnering with the creative powerhouses, YRF and Smriti Mundra to bring ‘The Romantics’ to our global audiences. The gripping documentary series is the real and definitive story of Yash Chopra and his son Aditya Chopra’s journey to building a world-class studio and will give our viewers a glimpse into the lives of one of the most influential families in Bollywood film history.”

With Pathaan, YRF is currently experiencing its greatest box office success ever. In just five days since its release, Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone movie has surpassed the $500 million mark. The Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, War, Sultan, Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Mohabbatein, and Dhoom series, to name a few, are some of the biggest blockbusters that Indian cinema has ever seen produced by YRF. Additionally, it has created ground-breaking works that have become classic hits, including Chak De! India, Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Mardaani, and Band Baaja Baarat, to name a few.

The docuseries’ teaser will be made available in 190 countries today by the world’s largest streaming service. Given the popularity of Bollywood around the world and the role YRF has played in establishing the reputation of the Hindi film industry internationally for more than 50 years, the trailer will also be subtitled in more than 32 other languages.
