At the recent launch event for Dell’s new XPS 13 and the Alienware 15 lineup, I had the opportunity to sit down with Anurag, Senior Director & GM – India Consumer Business at Dell, to discuss the brand’s latest hardware strategies. Responsible for driving consumer growth, retail transformation, and channel excellence in India, Anurag shared Dell’s vision for its latest consumer portfolio. From taking on Apple’s MacBook to redefining the premium computing experience, Dell is making aggressive moves in the consumer market. Here is our conversation on the new XPS 13, retail availability, and the future of Alienware.
How does the Dell XPS 13 differentiate itself from Dell’s more affordable laptop lineup, and what makes it a compelling premium option for consumers?
The XPS is absolutely different. The XPS 13 that we are launching redefines what value can look like in a premium category of notebooks. It represents what we believe is the next chapter in Dell’s premium journey. We are looking at a top-of-the-line notebook hitting an accessible price point of ₹79,990. For that, you get a form factor that is just 1 kilogram light, a 2.5K touch display with a 100% DCI-P3 colour gamut, and an incredibly thin profile with a Z-height of just 12.5 mm. This was designed keeping in mind that there is a consumer who wants more, and that’s exactly what the XPS 13 brings to the table. We previously promised that we would be back with the XPS in this space, and this is now our flagship product.
Why do you think consumers should choose the Dell XPS 13 over competing premium laptops such as the Apple MacBook?
Each competition has its own strengths, but we believe consumers will prefer the XPS 13 for a few key reasons. The XPS build quality is exceptional. We offer a 2.5K touch screen, and the way modern consumers use their devices, having touch functionality is a massive use-case advantage we hold over others. We also offer a superior number of ports for connectivity. The XPS is launching with Intel Core series processors, and we are also about to launch it with Intel Core Ultra series processors, giving consumers access to serious performance. Finally, the XPS 13 features an inbuilt fan for active cooling, whereas the MacBook Air relies on passive cooling.
Why did Dell choose to launch the XPS 13 through Reliance Digital instead of the usual e-commerce platforms, and will the laptop eventually become available on other online marketplaces?
While we won’t comment on future e-commerce availability just yet, I can confirm that the XPS 13 is currently available widely across all our Dell Exclusive Stores (DES), which is over 500 locations, as well as Reliance Digital and Dell.com.
The primary reason we went with a breadth of physical stores is that the XPS is a “touch and feel” product. Because of its premium build quality, it is very important that we give consumers the opportunity to experience that touch and feel in person. Reliance Digital gives us that widespread physical presence.
Is Dell’s wider retail rollout for the XPS 13 part of a broader strategy to strengthen its presence in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities across India?
Absolutely. The XPS is built on the premise that people deserve more. At just 12.75 mm thin, it is a product designed for anyone on the move. Whether it's in a bag, a car, or on a scooter, it is incredibly easy to carry. On top of that, it features a touch display, a backlit keyboard, and Wi-Fi 7. Given the accessible price point on a Core series processor with the XPS badge, we think this is a great opportunity for consumers across India.
With Dell launching the new Alienware lineup, are there any plans to bring gaming laptops back under the Dell brand, or will the company’s gaming focus remain exclusively on Alienware going forward?
We have recently revamped the Alienware series to simplify our brand architecture. Right now, Dell laptops are for everyday use, XPS is for creators, and Alienware is strictly for gamers and the creator community who need that specific power.
If you look at the new Alienware 15 we just launched, it features a “Stealth Mode”. This enhances versatility. When you aren’t gaming, you can activate Stealth Mode to work quietly without disturbing anyone around you. When you want full power, you turn it off, and it fires up all engines. It also features our legendary Alienware Cryo-tech cooling technology to ensure optimal thermals during intense gaming sessions. We believe the Alienware brand resonates very deeply with the gaming community.
With the XPS 13 expected to drive strong sales, how has Dell prepared its supply chain to ensure adequate availability of memory and storage components amid recent industry-wide shortages?
We are focused on delivering total value to our customers, and that is where we consistently win. We will have enough stock. The Dell supply chain is very robust and stable, so we are confident we will get enough supplies out there.
Looking back at the development and launch of the XPS 13, what are the biggest lessons Dell has learned from this product cycle?
The biggest lesson is that consumers simply want more value. By listening closely to our consumers and going back to the drawing board, we gained the confidence to launch a product that truly answers their needs. That constant feedback loop is what makes the XPS 13 a classic product for us.
