Air conditioners have steadily shifted from being considered a luxury to becoming an essential appliance in India’s climate. Yet penetration levels remain strikingly low. Industry estimates peg that just about 9–10% of Indian households own an AC, compared to far higher adoption of refrigerators or washing machines. The biggest barrier isn’t aspiration, it’s affordability. At the higher end of the tax bracket, ACs currently attract 28% GST, making them one of the most heavily taxed consumer durables in the country.
That could soon change. The government is actively considering a GST cut for ACs, which industry insiders believe could finally unlock mass adoption. The chatter goes a step further: while the broader category could fall to 18% GST, there are discussions around bringing efficient models under 12% GST. While, there is no formal confirmation on this, this move could push consumers toward smarter, greener cooling solutions.
Doing the Math
Today, a 1.5-ton, 5-star smart AC with Wi-Fi controls and advanced cooling typically retails for ₹37,000 to ₹45,000 (inclusive of 28% GST). If rates fall to 18%, these models could drop to roughly ₹34,000–₹41,500, translating into savings of about ₹2,900–₹3,500. Some of the pricier IoT-enabled models already cross the ₹50,000 mark, where the savings could climb as high as ₹7,000.
Today, a 1.5-ton, 5-star smart AC with Wi-Fi controls and advanced cooling typically retails for ₹37,000 to ₹45,000 (inclusive of 28% GST). If rates fall to 12%, these models could drop to roughly ₹32,400–₹39,400, translating into savings of about ₹4,600–₹5,600.
Even 3-star models, which usually sit between ₹32,000 and ₹36,000 (inclusive of 28% GST), could drop to roughly ₹29,500–₹33,200 if GST falls to 18%, translating into savings of about ₹2,500–₹2,800. During festive sales, add coupon and card offers of ₹1,000 to ₹1,500. The total savings then are about ₹3,500 to ₹4,300 on 3-star models and up to ₹7,000 on the pricier 5-star models.
Why It Matters Now
This isn’t just about short-term savings. A double-digit reduction on 5-star ACs could accelerate India’s long-promised premiumisation story. The cut, coupled with EMI options and bank offers, can help push more households to invest in smart, energy-efficient models instead of entry-level cooling units. That aligns well with the government’s sustainability agenda, which has even included proposals to regulate AC temperature settings between 20°C and 28°C (read our explainer).
Festive Timing Is Critical
While there is no clear timeline for when this change will come into place, if implemented in the next month or so, this could help cheer the mood. The festive season has always been when Indian households make big-ticket upgrades. The news of a potential GST cut has already caused some consumers to hold off, waiting for clarity. And given the savings (see our Maths above), we would also recommend people to hold off the purchase.
In effect, this isn’t just about cheaper ACs. It’s about creating the conditions for higher adoption of smart, energy-saving cooling appliances at exactly the time when families are most inclined to spend. It comes at a time when the AC makers have been dealing with weakened demand and inventory pile up due to unseasonal rains, and this will be a good boost to the entire industry.
