Roblox has introduced mandatory age checks for users in India who want to access chat features on the platform. With this change, Roblox becomes one of the first large-scale online gaming platforms to require age verification for chat access across all age groups, as part of a broader push to strengthen user safety and age-appropriate communication.
The rollout in India follows earlier deployments in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands, where a significant portion of daily active users have already completed the age-check process.
How the Age Check System Works
To access chat, users are required to complete an age check through the Roblox app using their device's camera. The process relies on facial age estimation and is designed to be completed within seconds. Roblox states that images and videos captured during the process are processed securely by its verification partner and deleted immediately after completion.
Users aged 13 and above also have the option to verify their age using official identification. While the age check itself is optional, chat functionality remains unavailable unless verification is completed.
Age-Based Chat Restrictions Explained
Once verified, users are placed into one of six age groups: under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, and 21 and above. By default, users can chat only with others within their own age group or those immediately above or below it.
For younger users, additional safeguards apply. Chat remains disabled by default for children under the age of 9, unless a parent provides explicit consent after completing the age-check process.
Corrections, Appeals, and Ongoing Monitoring
Roblox has built in appeal mechanisms for users who believe their age has been incorrectly estimated. Users can request a correction through alternative verification methods, including ID-based verification or parental controls that allow parents to update a child's age.
Beyond the initial check, Roblox continues to monitor user behaviour using multiple signals. If the system detects a significant mismatch between a user's verified age and observed behaviour, the platform may prompt the user to repeat the age-check process.
Expanded Tools for Parents and Caregivers
The age-check system is closely tied to Roblox's existing parental control features. Parents can review their child's verification status, manage communication settings, and update account details through parental dashboards.
Roblox also directs parents and caregivers to its Safety Center, which offers guides on account controls, communication settings, and tools designed to help families manage children's online interactions more effectively.

Requiring age checks for chat access is one component of Roblox's wider safety framework, which includes content moderation, communication limits for minors, and ongoing investments in child safety systems. The company has indicated that similar age-based verification may be extended to other areas of the platform in the future, including creator tools and collaboration features.
